The Department of Applied Science, DAS, in the University of California, Davis was established in the fall of 1963, by Edward Teller who proposed for... establishment of academic programs at the National Laboratories. DAS is a two-campus organization including Building Engineering III at the Davis Campus, and Hertz Hall adjacent to Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. It offers both graduate research programs and undergraduate majors in the College of Engineering. The undergraduate major of Optical Science and Engineering is one of four Optical Science undergraduate programs in the US. The four-year OSE program focuses training for the telecommunications, laser, and optics industries, as well as providing a training platform for students who wish to pursue advanced degrees in applied physics, applied science, engineering, and basic physics. The graduate program of DAS has graduated more than 350 Ph.D. students, many of whom have obtained positions in the national laboratories or in Silicon Valley companies.

The UC Davis School of Education, is one of 10 schools and colleges at the University of California, Davis. The University of California Davis School of Medicine is one of five University of California medical schools in the state of California, associated... with UC Davis. Founded in 1966, the UC Davis School of Medicine graduated its first class of physicians in 1972. The school maintains research facilities on the Davis campus while the majority of the school's teaching and clinical space is located in Sacramento, 17 miles to the east of the Davis campus. With the December 2006 opening of its new Education Building, the school recently transitioned all medical school classes to the Sacramento campus. Research activities will continue at both campuses for the foreseeable future. The school gained national attention when an applicant challenged the school's affirmative action admissions policy. The Supreme Court of the United States, in Regents of the University of California v. Jeff Clark is an American poet and book designer. Clark grew up in southern California. He studied at UC Davis and completed a Master of Fine Arts... in poetry at the Iowa Writer's Workshop. At Davis, Clark drummed for the band Buick, whose album Sweatertongue was released by Lather Records in 1992. He also drummed for the Popealopes, and is featured on their album Slowest Eye, released by Italy's Helter Skelter Records. In 1995, he graduated from the Iowa workshop and moved to San Francisco, where he wrote poetry and edited a zine, Faucheuse. He also worked for Wilsted & Taylor, a book design studio in Oakland, California. Clark's first book, The Little Door Slides Back, was a 1996 winner of the National Poetry Series award. It was published by Sun and Moon Press in 1997, and reprinted in 2004 by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. John Yau, writing in Boston Review, said that Clark evoked "a fragile, interior world largely lit by the moon, cheap paperbacks, and noir movies, a place in which predicaments and paradoxes abound." Farrar Straus Giroux also published Clark's second collection, Music and Suicide, which received the 2004 James Laughlin Award.

Anthony Swofford is a writer and former United States Marine known for being the author of the book Jarhead, published in 2003, which is primarily... based on his accounts of various situations encountered in the first Gulf War. This memoir was the basis of the 2005 movie of the same name, directed by Sam Mendes. The title is derived from the name of the traditional high and tight haircuts favored by the Marines. In his own words Swofford describes his younger self, before and during his time in the Marine Corps, as "a reader and a loner". Born into a military family, Swofford was raised living on a military base. His father had served in Vietnam, and before that his grandfather had fought in World War II. In fact, he was conceived in Honolulu while his father was on a 24-hour break from fighting in Vietnam. Terrified of being a failure in a 'normal' life, Swofford wanted to join the Marines from an early age, as he saw it as "an entry into manhood". However Swofford's father was against his joining, and the first of two recruiters to visit were escorted from the house.

His work, in his various roles, reflects an immersion in both Buddhist spirituality and nature. Snyder has translated literature into English from ancient Chinese and modern Japanese. For many years, Snyder served as a faculty member at the University of California, Davis, and he also served for a time on the California Arts Council. Gary Sherman Snyder was born in San Francisco, California to Harold and Lois Hennessy Snyder. Snyder is of German, Scots-Irish, and English ancestry. His family, impoverished by the Great Depression, moved to King County, Washington, when he was two years old. There they tended dairy cows, kept laying hens, had a small orchard, and made cedar-wood shingles, until moving to Portland, Oregon ten years later. At the age of seven, Snyder was laid up for four months by an accident.

Shang Fa Yang was an acclaimed plant scientist and a professor at the University of California, Davis. Shang Fa Yang was born in 1932 in Taiwan. He... earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in agricultural chemistry at the National Taiwan University. After completing his master's degree, he went to the United States and completed his doctoral degree in plant biochemistry from Utah State University. After completing his PhD, he conducted postdoctoral research at the University of California, Davis, New York Medical School, and University of California, San Diego. After completing his postdoctoral research, he joined the faculty University of California, Davis in 1966. Shang Fa Yang was known for his research that unlocked the key to prolonging freshness in fruits and flowers. His research focused on how plants produce ethylene, which is important in regulating a host of plant functions, ranging from seed germination to fruit ripening. He studied the pathway of ethylene biosynthesis and proved unequivocally the central role of methionine as a precursor of ethylene.

Gilbert , Professor Emerita of English at the University of California, Davis, is an influential literary critic and poet who has published... widely in the fields of feminist literary criticism, feminist theory, and psychoanalytic criticism. She is perhaps best known for her collaborative critical work with Susan Gubar, with whom she co-authored, among other works, The Madwoman in the Attic , a landmark in 1970s American feminism. Madwoman in the Attic is widely recognized as a text central to second-wave feminism. She lives in Berkeley, California, and in Paris, France. Her husband, Elliot L. Gilbert, was Chair of the Department of English at University of California, Davis, until his death in 1991. She also had a long-term relationship with David Gale, renowned mathematician at University of California, Berkeley, until his death in 2008. She is the mother of three and grandmother of four. Gilbert received her B. A. from Cornell University, her M. A. from New York University, and her Ph.D. in English literature from Columbia University in 1968.

Alan Shaw Taylor is a historian specializing in early American history. He is the author of a number of books about colonial America, the American... Revolution, and the Early American Republic and won a Pulitzer Prize for his work. Taylor graduated from Colby College, in Waterville, Maine, in 1977 and earned his Ph.D. from Brandeis University in 1986. His thesis advisor was Marvin Meyers, a historian of Jacksonian America, whom Taylor praised in the preface of his book Writing Early American History . Currently he is a professor of history at the University of California, Davis, having taught previously at Boston University. Taylor is best known for his contributions to microhistory, best exemplified in his Pulitzer-Prize winning history of William Cooper and the settlement of Cooperstown, New York. Using court records, land records, letters, and diaries, Taylor painstakingly reconstructs the economic, political and social history of New England and the settlement of New York.
