UCLA School of Medicine or David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA is an accredited medical school located in Los Angeles, California, United States.... The school was named in honor of media mogul David Geffen who donated $200 million in unrestricted funds to the school in 2001. UC Board of Regents voted to establish a medical school affiliated with UCLA in 1945. In 1947, Stafford L. Warren was appointed as the first dean. Dr. Warren had served on the Manhattan Project while on leave from his post at University of Rochester School of Medicine. As the founding dean of medical school, he proved to be a capable administrator and fundraiser. His choice of core faculty consisted of his former associates at Rochester in Andrew Dowdy as the first professor of radiology, John Lawrence as the first professor of medicine, and Charles Carpenter as the first professor of infectious diseases. Along with William Longmire Jr., a promising 34-year-old surgeon from Johns Hopkins, the group was called the Founding Five. Building of the medical center and the School of Medicine began in 1949. The 1951 charter class consisted of 26 men and 2 women.

The UCLA School of Law is the law school of the University of California, Los Angeles. It has been approved by the American Bar Association since... 1950. It joined the Association of American Law Schools in 1952. Founded in 1949, UCLA School of Law is currently one of five law schools within the University of California system. The others are UC Berkeley School of Law, King Hall at UC Davis, UC Hastings College of the Law in San Francisco, and UC Irvine School of Law. UCLA Law's first dean was L. Dale Coffman, who recruited elderly Harvard dean Roscoe Pound as one of the school's first professors. The school was forced to operate in a Quonset hut for its first two years until a proper building was constructed. In September 1949, Pound insisted on delivering the school's first ever keynote address in the Latin language, in the Quonset hut. The UCLA Law Review, the law school's flagship scholarly journal, was first published in 1953. Additionally, the first scholarly journal in the nation focused on issues affecting Latinos, the Chicana/o Latina/o Law Review, was first published in 1971 as the Chicano Law Review.

William Forsyth Sharpe is the STANCO 25 Professor of Finance, Emeritus at Stanford University's Graduate School of Business and the winner of the... 1990 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences. He was one of the originators of the Capital Asset Pricing Model, created the Sharpe ratio for risk-adjusted investment performance analysis, contributed to the development of the binomial method for the valuation of options, the gradient method for asset allocation optimization, and returns-based style analysis for evaluating the style and performance of investment funds. William Sharpe was born on June 16, 1934 in Boston, Massachusetts. As his father was in the National Guard, the family moved several times during World War II, until they finally settled in Riverside, California. Sharpe spent the rest of his childhood and teenage in Riverside, also completing most of his pre-college education there. In 1951 he enrolled at the University of California at Berkeley planning to pursue a degree in medicine. However, in the first year he decided to change his focus and moved to the University of California at Los Angeles to study Business Administration.

Faye Kellerman is an American author of mystery novels, in particular the "Peter Decker/Rina Lazarus" series, as well as three non-series books, The... Quality of Mercy, Moon Music and Straight into Darkness. Kellerman was born in St. Louis, Missouri. She attended UCLA where she earned a B.A. in mathematics in 1974. Four years later she received her Doctorate of Dental Surgery degree. At that time she "fully intended to pursue a career as a dentist". Despite her intention, she has never practiced dentistry and was a housewife before publishing her first novel. In a 1997 essay she says she can't pinpoint the metamorphosis from oral hygienist to writer of detective fiction, but several factors that steered her toward mystery writing were: "a desire for justice, a suspicious nature, an overactive imagination, and, of course, a penchant for the bizarre." Kellerman is a practicing Orthodox Jew, as is her husband, the novelist Jonathan Kellerman. Her writing frequently deals with Jewish themes and characters, incorporating them into the framework of the traditional mystery.

Kenneth Mason Easley, Jr. is a former American college and professional football player who was a strong safety in the National Football League for... seven seasons during the 1980s. Easley played college football for the University of California, Los Angeles, and was a three-time consensus All-American. A first-round pick in the 1981 NFL Draft, he played professionally for the NFL's Seattle Seahawks from 1981 to 1987. He is considered as one of the greatest Seahawks players of all-time and one of the greatest safeties in NFL history. In 1984, Easley was named the NFL Defensive Player of the Year by the Associated Press. He was a four-time All-Pro selection and was elected to the Pro Bowl five times in his career. Diller was born and raised in San Francisco, California, the son of Reva and Michael Diller. He began his career through a family connection in the mailroom of the William Morris Agency after dropping out of UCLA after one semester. Jared Mason Diamond is an American scientist and author whose work draws from a variety of fields. He is currently Professor of Geography and... Physiology at UCLA. He is best known for his award-winning popular science books The Third Chimpanzee, Guns, Germs, and Steel, and Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed. Diamond was born in Boston, Massachusetts, to a Bessarabian Jewish family. His father was the physician Louis K. Diamond, and his mother the teacher, musician, and linguist Flora Kaplan. He attended the Roxbury Latin School, earning his A.B. from Harvard College in 1958, and his Ph.D. in physiology and membrane biophysics from the University of Cambridge in 1961. After graduating from Cambridge, he returned to Harvard as a Junior Fellow until 1965, and, in 1968, became Professor of Physiology at UCLA Medical School. While in his twenties, he also developed a second, parallel, career in the ornithology of New Guinea, and has since undertaken numerous research projects in New Guinea and nearby islands.

Julian Seymour Schwinger was an American theoretical physicist. He is best known for his work on the theory of quantum electrodynamics, in... particular for developing a relativistically invariant perturbation theory, and for renormalizing QED to one loop order. Schwinger is recognized as one of the greatest physicists of the twentieth century, responsible for much of modern quantum field theory, including a variational approach, and the equations of motion for quantum fields. He developed the first electroweak model, and the first example of confinement in 1+1 dimensions. He is responsible for the theory of multiple neutrinos, Schwinger terms, and the theory of the spin 3/2 field. Schwinger was born in New York City where he attended Townsend Harris High School and then the City College of New York as an undergraduate before transferring to Columbia University, where he received his B.A. in 1936 and his Ph.D. in 1939 at the age of 21. He worked at the University of California, Berkeley and was later appointed to a position at Purdue University.

Alan Kay showed remarkable ability at an early age, learning to read fluently at three years old. In an interview on education in America with the Davis Group Ltd. Alan Kay said, "I had the fortune or misfortune to learn how to read fluently starting at the age of three. So I had read maybe 150 books by the time I hit 1st grade. And I already knew that the teachers were lying to me." Originally from Springfield, Massachusetts, Kay attended the University of Colorado at Boulder, earning a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics and Molecular Biology.
