Kresge College is one of the residential colleges that make up the University of California, Santa Cruz. Founded in 1971, Kresge is located on the... western edge of the UCSC campus. Kresge is the sixth of ten colleges at UCSC, and originally one of the most experimental. The first provost of Kresge, Bob Edgar, had been strongly influenced by his experience in T-groups run by NTL Institute. He asked a T-group facilitator, psychologist Michael Kahn, to help him start the college. When they arrived at UCSC, they taught a course, Creating Kresge College, in which they and the students in it designed the college. Kresge was a participatory democracy, and students had extraordinary power in the early years. The college was run by two committees: Community Affairs and Academic Affairs. Any faculty member, student or staff member who wanted to be on these committees could be on them. Students' votes counted as much as the faculty or staff. These committees determined the budgets and hiring. They were also run by consensus.

Will Bagley is a historian specializing in the history of the Western United States and the American Old West. Bagley has written about the fur... trade, overland emigration, American Indians, military history, frontier violence, railroads, mining, and Utah and the Mormons. William Grant Bagley was born to Lawrence Miles Bagley and Margene Bailey Bagley on May 27, 1950 in Salt Lake City. From the age of nine he was raised in Oceanside, California, where his father was a long-serving mayor in the 1980s. His younger brother Pat Bagley became the notable Salt Lake Tribune editorial cartoonist and they are the uncles of professional surfer Dusty Payne. Bagley attended Brigham Young University in 1967-68, and then he transferred to University of California at Santa Cruz , where he obtained his B.A. in History in 1971. At Santa Cruz Bagley studied writing with Page Stegner and history with John Dizikes. He graduated from UCSC between Richard White and Patty Limerick, two of the leading lights of the "New Western History." While at UCSC he received the California State Scholar and President’s Scholar awards.

Kent George Nagano is an American conductor and opera administrator. He is currently the music director of the Orchestre Symphonique de... Montréal and the Bavarian State Opera. Nagano was born in Berkeley, California, while his parents were in graduate school at the University of California, Berkeley. He grew up in Morro Bay, a city located on the Central Coast of California. He is Japanese American. He studied sociology and music at the University of California, Santa Cruz. After graduation he moved to San Francisco State University to study music. While there, he took composition courses from Grosvenor Cooper and Roger Nixon. He also studied at the École Normale de Musique in Paris. His first conducting job was with the Opera Company of Boston, where he was assistant conductor to Sarah Caldwell. In 1978, he became the conductor of the Berkeley Symphony, his first music directorship. He stepped down from this position in 2009. During his tenure in Berkeley, Nagano became a champion of the music of Olivier Messiaen and initiated a correspondence with him.

Lawrence Weschler is an author of works of creative nonfiction. A graduate of Cowell College of the University of California, Santa Cruz , Weschler... was for over twenty years a staff writer at The New Yorker, where his work shuttled between political tragedies and cultural comedies. He is a two-time winner of the George Polk Awards—for Cultural Reporting in 1988 and Magazine Reporting in 1992—and was also a recipient of Lannan Literary Award . Beginning in 1999, his "Convergences" essays appeared regularly in McSweeney's Quarterly; a collection of these essays, Everything That Rises: A Book of Convergences, was published in 2006 and received the National Book Critics Circle Award for Criticism. Since 2001, Weschler has been the director of the New York Institute for the Humanities at New York University. He taught throughout the 1990s at Sarah Lawrence College in New York. In 2003, Weschler organized and edited a pilot issue of Omnivore, a prospective periodical described by Steven Heller as a "biannual magazine of writing and visual culture from The New York Institute of the Humanities at New York University.

Gillian Welch is an American singer-songwriter. She performs with her musical partner, guitarist David Rawlings. Their sparse and dark musical... style, which combines elements of Appalachian music, Bluegrass, and Americana, is described by The New Yorker as "at once innovative and obliquely reminiscent of past rural forms". Welch and Rawlings have released five critically acclaimed albums. Their 1996 debut, Revival, and the 2001 release Time , received nominations for the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album. Their 2003 album, Soul Journey, introduced electric guitar, drums and a more upbeat sound to their body of work. After a gap of eight years, they released their fifth studio album, The Harrow & The Harvest, in 2011. Welch was an associate producer and performed on two songs of the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack, a platinum album that won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 2002. Welch has collaborated and recorded with distinguished musicians such as Alison Krauss, Ryan Adams, Jay Farrar, Emmylou Harris, The Decemberists, and Ani DiFranco. Welch and Rawlings perform at many music festivals.

John Dizikes Ph.D. is a Professor Emeritus of American Studies at the University of California, Santa Cruz, who served as Cowell College provost and... who is a recipient of the UCSC Alumni Association's Distinguished Teaching Award. Dizikes is the author of numerous articles and four books, and won the 1993 National Book Critics Circle Award for "Opera in America: A Cultural History." He also has an interest in thoroughbred horse racing, and in 2000 wrote a biography of Hall of Fame jockey Tod Sloan.

Donald Edward Osterbrock was an American astronomer, best known for his work on star formation and on the history of astronomy. Osterbrock was born... in Cincinnati. His father was an electrical engineer. He served with the US Army in the Second World War, making weather observations in the Pacific He was educated at the University of Chicago, where he received bachelor's and master's degrees in physics and a PhD in astronomy in 1952. He was a student of Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar while working at University of Chicago's Yerkes Observatory. His work there with William Wilson Morgan and Stewart Sharpless showed the existence of the Milky Way's spiral arms. He became a post-doctoral researcher, instructor and Assistant Professor at the California Institute of Technology until 1958. He was then appointed Assistant Professor at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, received tenure there in 1959, and was promoted to full professor in 1961. In 1973 he moved from Madison to the University of California at Santa Cruz, as Professor of Astronomy and Astrophysics, and Director of Lick Observatory, a position he held until 1981.

Sandra Moore Faber is a University Professor of Astronomy and Astrophysics at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and works at the Lick... Observatory. In 1966, she obtained a B.A., with high honors, in physics from Swarthmore College. In 1972 she received her Ph.D. in Astronomy from Harvard University, She was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1985 and the American Philosophical Society on 29 April 2001. Faber was the head of a team that discovered a mass concentration called "The Great Attractor". She was also the Principal Investigator the Nuker Team, which used the Hubble Space Telescope to search for supermassive black holes at the centers of galaxies. Faber was deeply involved in the initial use of Hubble as a member of the WFPC-1 camera team, and was responsible for diagnosing the spherical aberration in the Hubble primary. Faber says, "I hope that you take time to contemplate the implications of what you are studying. This is one of the rare opportunities to think about where the human race is going.
