The University of Connecticut Health Center is an integrated academic medical center that is involved in three areas: academics, research, and... clinical care. The UConn Health Center is at the center of Bioscience Connecticut, a plan introduced by Connecticut Governor Dannel P. Malloy and approved by the Connecticut General Assembly in 2011. Based in Farmington, Connecticut – a suburb of the state’s capitol of Hartford – the UConn Health Center is home to the School of Medicine, School of Dental Medicine, John Dempsey Hospital, UConn Medical Group, UConn Health Partners, University Dentists and a thriving research enterprise. With approximately 5,000 employees, the UConn Health Center is closely linked with the University's main campus in Storrs through multiple, cross-campus academic projects. John Dempsey Hospital: The university hospital, John Dempsey Hospital provides specialized and routine inpatient and outpatient services for adults. It is active in geriatrics, maternal fetal medicine, cardiology programs, cancer care and orthopaedics. In addition, the John Dempsey Hospital is home to the only full service Emergency Department in the Farmington Valley.

Samuel Jaskilka was a four-star general whose last assignment was Assistant Commandant of the United States Marine Corps . General Jaskilka is a... highly decorated veteran of the Korean War, having led the landing at Inchon as a company commander with the 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines. He retired from the Marine Corps in 1978 after 34 years of service. Samuel Jaskilka was born on December 15, 1919, in Ansonia, Connecticut, in a family of Ukrainian-Americans. He graduated from Ansonia High School in 1937. In May 1942, he graduated from the University of Connecticut, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. On September 26, 1942, Jaskilka accepted an appointment as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve and was assigned to active duty. He completed the Reserve Officers' Class, Marine Corps Schools, Quantico, Virginia in 1942, and completed the Sea School at Portsmouth, Virginia, in 1943. He accepted an appointment in the regular Marine Corps in March 1943.

Ann Beattie is an American short story writer and novelist. She has received an award for excellence from the American Academy and Institute of Arts... and Letters and a PEN/Bernard Malamud Award for excellence in the short story form. Her work has been compared to that of Alice Adams, J.D. Salinger, John Cheever, and John Updike. She holds an undergraduate degree from American University and a masters degree from the University of Connecticut. Born in Washington, D.C., Beattie grew up in Chevy Chase, Washington, D.C.. She gained attention in the early 1970s with short stories published in The Western Humanities Review, Ninth Letter, the Atlantic Monthly, and The New Yorker. Critics have praised her writing for its keen observations and dry, matter-of-fact irony which chronicle disillusionments of the upper-middle-class generation that grew up in the 1960s. In 1976, she published her first book of short stories, Distortions, and her first novel, Chilly Scenes of Winter, later made into a film. Beattie's style has evolved over the years.

Rebecca Rose Lobo-Rushin is an American television basketball analyst and former women's basketball player in the Women's National Basketball... Association from 1997 to 2003. Lobo, at 6' 4", played the center position for much of her career. Lobo was born in Hartford, Connecticut, the youngest daughter of RuthAnn and Dennis Joseph Lobo. Her father is of Cuban and Polish descent and her mother is of German and Irish heritage; Lobo was raised a Catholic. Her brother Jason played basketball at Dartmouth College and her sister Rachel played basketball at Salem State College. Both her parents were teachers; in addition, her father was a basketball coach. Raised in Southwick, Massachusetts, Lobo was the state scoring record-holder with 2,740 points in her high school career for Southwick-Tolland Regional High School in Massachusetts. She held this record for 18 years until it was eclipsed by Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir of the new Leadership Charter School in Springfield on January 26, 2009. More than 100 colleges recruited Lobo, but she chose the University of Connecticut due to proximity and her belief in its academic excellence.

Nechama Tec is a Professor Emerita of Sociology at the University of Connecticut. She received her Ph.D. in sociology at Columbia University, where... she studied and worked with the highly-regarded sociologist Daniel Bell, and is a noted Holocaust scholar. Her 1986 book, When Light Pierced the Darkness and her 1984 memoir Dry Tears: The Story of a Lost Childhood both received the Merit of Distinction Award from the Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rit. She is also author of the book Defiance: The Bielski Partisans on which the 2008 film Defiance is based, as well as a study of women in the holocaust. She was awarded the 1994 International Anne Frank Special Recognition prize for that book. She was born in Lublin, Poland to a family of Polish Jews in 1931, and was 8 years old in 1939 when Poland was invaded by Germany. She survived the Holocaust thanks to her life being saved by Polish Catholics. After the war she immigrated to Israel and later moved to the United States, where she earned a doctorate at Columbia University. She is the mother of film director Roland Tec.
