The Centre for the History of the Book was established at The University of Edinburgh as an international and interdisciplinary centre for advanced... research into all aspects of the material culture of the text - its production, circulation, and reception from manuscript to the electronic text. Founded by Bill Bell and Jonquil Bevan in 1995, it now serves a community of over 30 scholars across several university departments. The CHB is today an internationally recognised centre dedicated to the promotion of Bibliography and Book History. As well as hosting international conferences and seminars, it provides a focus for a number of research projects, and facilitates postgraduate study in the field of the History of the Book.

The business school is closely tied with the Univerisity of Edinburgh, which received its royal charter in 1582. The University of Edinburgh Medical School is part of the College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine of the University of Edinburgh in Scotland.... Established in 1726, during the Scottish Enlightenment, Edinburgh Medical School is one of the oldest medical schools in Scotland and the English-speaking world. It ranks first in Scotland and third in the UK . It is ranked second in the UK by the independent Complete University Guide. As of 2008 the school accepts 218 European Union medical students per year and an additional 16 students from outwith the EU. Admission to Edinburgh Medical School is competitive, with only 15% of UK and EU applicants as well as 8% of international applicants accepted each year. Although the University of Edinburgh's Faculty of Medicine was not formally organised until 1726, medicine had been taught at Edinburgh since the beginning of the sixteenth century. Its formation was dependent on the incorporation of the Surgeons and Barber Surgeons, in 1505 and the foundation of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 1681.

The Moray House School of Education is a school within the College of Humanities and Social Science at the University of Edinburgh. It is based in... historic buildings on the Holyrood Campus, located between the Royal Mile and Holyrood Road. The School offers courses at all levels of higher education, including teacher training, Community Education, E-learning, Physical Education and Sports science. It is also a centre for educational research. The School has existed in one form or another since the mid-19th century, joining the University of Edinburgh in 1998. It is currently subdivided into five departments: The institution currently known as Moray House was originally opened as a normal school following the Disruption of 1843. Known as The Free Church of Scotland’s Normal and Sessional School, it was originally located in Whitefield Chapel, and then in rooms below the Music Room in Rose Street. In 1848, the school moved to its current location in Moray House, in the Canongate.

The Royal School of Veterinary Studies, commonly referred to as the Dick Vet, is the veterinary school of the University of Edinburgh, Scotland.... Professor David Argyle has been head of the school since 1 November, 2011. Originally called the Highland Society’s Veterinary School, Edinburgh, the Dick Vet, as it came to be known, was established by William Dick, a former student of the anatomist John Barclay of the College of Surgeons. The first regular classes at the school were begun in November 1823, although lectures to small groups of students had been provided for four years prior to this date. That first session of regular classes was financed by student fees and a grant from the Highland Society of Scotland at Edinburgh, of which John Barclay was a director. Mary Dick, William's elder sister, was reputed to have been instrumental, from the early days, in the administration of the school. Although an autonomous institution, the students also attended the lectures in medicine at the University of Edinburgh and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

Houston Alfred Baker Jr. is an American scholar specializing in African American literature and currently serving as a Distinguished University... Professor at Vanderbilt University in the English department. Baker served as president of the Modern Language Association, editor of the journal American Literature, and has authored several books, including The Journey Back: Issues in Black Literature and Criticism, Modernism and the Harlem Renaissance, Blues, Ideology, and Afro-American Literature, and Workings of the Spirit: The Poetics of Afro-American Women's Writing. Baker was included in the 2006 textbook, Fifty Key Literary Theorists by Richard J. Lane. Baker was born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky, which he later described as "racist" and "stultifying". The racism and violence he says he experienced as a youth would later prompt him to conclude "I had been discriminated against and called 'Nigger' enough to think that what America needed was a good Black Revolution." He recently revised such a summary judgment in his book combining memoir and critique titled I Don't Hate the South .

Arthur James Marshall Smith was a Canadian poet and anthologist. He "was a prominent member of a group of Montreal poets" -- the Montreal Group,... which included Leon Edel, Leo Kennedy, A.M. Klein, and F.R. Scott -- "who distinguished themselves by their modernism in a culture still rigidly rooted in Victorianism." Smith was born in Montreal, but lived in England from 1918 to 1920, where he "studied for the Cambridge Local Examinations, ‘and failed everything except English and history’ ." In England he became aware of contemporary poetry: "he frequented Harold Monroe's bookshop, then the citadel of Georgian poetry, and read much in the recent war poets and the Imagists." Returning to Montreal, Smith entered McGill University in 1921. While an undergraduate there in 1924 he wrote for and co-edited the McGill Daily Literary Supplement; in 1925, as a graduate student, he and F.R. Scott founded the McGill Fortnightly Review, which billed itself as a "an independent journal of literature, the arts, and student affairs edited and published by a group of undergraduates at McGill University.

James Edmund Neil Paterson , known as Neil Paterson, was a Scottish screenwriter. Born in Greenock, Renfrewshire , Paterson graduated from the... University of Edinburgh and had a brief career in senior football. He played as an inside left for Scottish League teams Leith Athletic and Dundee United, becoming captain of the latter in the 1936–37 season. Despite his success in football – he scored 9 goals from 26 league appearances for United, including a hat-trick – he remained an amateur player, spurning the opportunity to go professional. As an amateur he was automatically released at the end of the season, although he played one further game for the club in an emergency. After his football career finished he became a writer, initially as a sports journalist for D.C. Thomson and after the Second World War as an author, penning a number of well received novels and short stories. In 1953, he adapted his own short story The Kidnappers for the cinema and subsequently wrote a number of screenplays, including the Academy Award-winning script for Room at the Top in 1959, adapted from the novel by John Braine.

Charles Glover Barkla FRS was a British physicist, and the winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1917 for his work in X-ray spectroscopy and... related areas in the study of X-rays . Barkla was born in Widnes, England, and he studied at the Liverpool Institute and at Liverpool University. In 1899, Barkla went to Trinity College, Cambridge, as an Exhibition Scholar to work in the Cavendish Laboratory under the physicist J. J. Thomson. At the end of a year and a half, his love of music led him to move on to King's College, Cambridge, where he joined its chapel choir. He completed his bachelor of arts degree in 1903, and then his Master of Arts degree in 1907. No information seems to be available about when or where he earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree, but it is known that the great physicists J.J. Thompson and Oliver Lodge were his doctoral advisors. In 1913, after having worked at the Universities of Cambridge and Liverpool, and King's College, London, Barkla was appointed as a professor of natural philosophy at the University of Edinburgh, a position that he held until his death.

Arthur John Robin Gorell Milner FRS FRSE was a prominent British computer scientist. Milner was born in Yealmpton, near Plymouth, England into a... military family. He was awarded a scholarship to Eton College in 1947, and subsequently served in the Royal Engineers, attaining the rank of Second Lieutenant. He then enrolled at King's College, Cambridge, graduating in 1957, Milner first worked as a schoolteacher then as a programmer at Ferranti, before entering academia at City University, London, then Swansea University, Stanford University, and from 1973 at the University of Edinburgh, where he was a co-founder of the Laboratory for Foundations of Computer Science . He returned to Cambridge as the head of the Computer Laboratory in 1995 from which he eventually stepped down, although he was still at the laboratory. From 2009, Milner was a SICSA Advanced Research Fellow and held the Chair of Computer Science at the University of Edinburgh. Milner died of a heart attack on 20 March 2010 in Cambridge. His wife, Lucy, died shortly before him.
