The John A. Burns School of Medicine is a public, co-educational institution of the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa in Honolulu,... Hawaiʻi and is one of the leading medical education institutions in the United States. In 1992, Harvard University identified the John A. Burns School of Medicine as one of ten "leaders in the reform and improvement of medical education," for its innovative problem-based learning curriculum. Named after Governor of Hawaiʻi John A. Burns, it is the only US-LCME accredited medical school in the Pacific. The John A. Burns School of Medicine is accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education of the Association of American Medical Colleges and the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association. Residency programs are affiliated with accredited teaching hospitals: Queen's Medical Center, Kapi'olani Medical Center for Women & Children, Kuakini Medical Center, and Tripler Army Medical Center. An institution of the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa in Honolulu, Hawaiʻi, the William S. Richardson School of Law is a public law... school. Named after its patriarch, former Hawaiʻi State Supreme Court Chief Justice William S. Richardson, a zealous advocate of Hawai'ian culture, it is the state's only law school. Richardson subsequently augments its regime of legal studies by placing special emphasis on fields of law of particular importance to Hawaiʻi and the surrounding Pacific and Asian region, including Native Hawaiian Law, Pacific-Asian Legal Studies, Environmental Law, and maritime law. Imbibing Hawaiian values, its mission is to provide an "excellent" legal education across this regime "to highly qualified and diverse students in a collaborative, multidisciplinary educational community that is deeply committed to teaching, scholarship, public service, ethical responsibility, and the pursuit of social and economic justice." A member of the Association of American Law Schools , the school is accredited by the Council of the Section of Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar of the American Bar Association .

Milton Murayama is an American Nisei novelist and playwright. His first novel, All I Asking for Is My Body is considered a classic novel of the... experiences of Japanese Americans in Hawaii before and during World War II. Murayama was born in Maui, Hawaii to Japanese immigrant parents from Kyushu. When he was about 12, his family moved to a sugar plantation camp at Pu'ukoli'i. This was a company town of several hundred workers and their families that no longer exists. Murayama's experiences there provided the material for his novels. After graduating from high school in Lahaina in 1941, he attended the University of Hawaiʻi,. He served in the Territorial Guard after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, but was abruptly discharged with the other Japanese-Americans. He soon volunteered with military intelligence. As a native speaker of Japanese he was sent to Taiwan as a translator to help facilitate the surrender and repatriation of Japanese troops there. He returned to Hawaii in 1946. He received his B.A. from the University of Hawaiʻi in English and philosophy the following year. He then attended Columbia University under the G.I.
