The C.T. Bauer College of Business is the business school of the University of Houston and is fully accredited by the AACSB International. It offers... B.B.A., M.B.A., MS Accountancy, MS Finance, and the Houston metropolitan area's only Ph.D. program in business administration. The College of Business Administration was founded in 1942 as the business school of the University of Houston. On July 12, 2000, businessman Ted Bauer announced a $40 million donation to the University of Houston's College of Business Administration. In recognition of his generosity, the college was renamed the C.T. Bauer College of Business. The Bauer College is located on the campus of the University of Houston and has been housed in Melcher Hall since 1986. Melcher Hall is named after Leroy Melcher—an alumnus of the University of Houston and successful businessman—who donated $3 million to the business school. The school has students from many countries around the world and is considered one of the most diverse schools in the US. The Bauer College broke ground on June 5, 2008 for the Michael J. Cemo Hall. The Rebecca and John J. Moores School of Music is the music school of the University of Houston. The Moores School offers the Bachelor of Music,... Bachelor of Arts in Music, Master of Music, and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees in music performance, conducting, theory and composition, music history and literature, pedagogy, and music education and also offers a Certificate of Music Performance. It is a component of the University of Houston College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences . The Moores School is a fully accredited member of the National Association of Schools of Music . Its namesakes are UH alumni John Moores and his former wife Rebecca. As of the 2011–2012 academic year, the Director of the Moores School is David Ashley White. The University of Houston was founded in 1927, and the music department was formed in 1940. In 1969 the department was officially designated as the University of Houston School of Music. In 1972 the School of Music moved into the Fine Arts Building, a facility it shared with the Department of Art.

The College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences is one of twelve academic colleges at the University of Houston. With nearly 10,000 students, CLASS... is the largest college of the university, and was established in 2000 after the College of Humanities, Fine Arts, and Communication and the College of Social Sciences merged together. In 1987 Harold Jones, the chairperson of the Hispanic and Classical Languages department, said that the Spanish language was so popular at UH that not every student is able to fill a Spanish class. Jones said that the students are aware that Houston has important ties with Latin America and that learning a second language improves career opportunities.

Gene Wolfe is an American science fiction and fantasy writer. He is noted for his dense, allusive prose as well as the strong influence of his... Catholic faith, to which he converted after marrying into the religion. He is a prolific short story writer and novelist and has won many science fiction and fantasy literary awards . Wolfe is most famous for The Book of the New Sun , the first part of his Solar Cycle. In 1998, Locus magazine ranked it third-best fantasy novel before 1990, based on a poll of subscribers that considered it and several other series as single entries. Wolfe was born in New York. He had polio as a small child. While attending Texas A&M University, he published his first speculative fiction in The Commentator, a student literary journal. Wolfe dropped out during his junior year, and was drafted to fight in the Korean War. After returning to the United States he earned a degree from the University of Houston and became an industrial engineer.

Barthelme also worked as a newspaper reporter... for the Houston Post, managing editor of Location magazine, director of the Contemporary Arts Museum in Houston , co-founder of Fiction , and a professor at various universities. He also was one of the original founders of The University of Houston Creative Writing Program. Donald Barthelme was born in Philadelphia in 1931. His father and mother were fellow students at the University of Pennsylvania. The family moved to Texas two years later, where Barthelme's father became a professor of architecture at the University of Houston, where Barthelme would later study journalism. In 1951, as a student, he wrote his first articles for the Houston Post. Two years later, Barthelme was drafted into the U.S. Army, arriving in Korea on July 27, 1953, the day of the signing of the Korean Armistice Agreement, which ended the Korean War. He served briefly as the editor of an Army newspaper before returning to the U.S.

Jack Joseph Valenti was a longtime president of the Motion Picture Association of America. During his 38-year tenure in the MPAA, he created the... MPAA film rating system, and he was generally regarded as one of the most influential pro-copyright lobbyists in the world. Valenti was born in Houston, Texas, USA, on September 5, 1921, the son of Italian immigrants. During World War II, he was a lieutenant in the United States Army Air Corps, flew 51 combat missions as the pilot-commander of a B-25 medium bomber and received four decorations. Valenti was an alumnus of the University of Houston where he was awarded a B.B.A. in 1946. He later received an M.B.A. from Harvard University. During his time at UH, Valenti worked on The Daily Cougar newspaper staff, and served as president of the university's student government. Valenti would later serve on the university's board of regents, and became the School of Communication's namesake when it was renamed to the Jack J. Valenti School of Communication in April 2008. In 2002, the university also awarded him an honorary doctorate.

Frederick Carlton "Carl" Lewis is an American former track and field athlete, who won 10 Olympic medals including 9 gold, and 10 World Championships... medals, of which 8 were gold. His career spanned from 1979 when he first achieved a world ranking to 1996 when he last won an Olympic title and subsequently retired. Lewis became an actor and has appeared in a number of films. Lewis was a dominant sprinter and long jumper who topped the world rankings in the 100 m, 200 m and long jump events frequently from 1981 to the early 1990s, was named Athlete of the Year by Track & Field News in 1982, 1983 and 1984, and set world records in the 100 m, 4 x 100 m and 4 x 200 m relays. His world record in the indoor long jump has stood since 1984 and his 65 consecutive victories in the long jump achieved over a span of 10 years is one of the sport’s longest undefeated streaks. Over the course of his long athletics career, Lewis broke ten seconds for the 100 metres 15 times and twenty seconds for the 200 metres 10 times.

Paul Chu is an Chinese-American physicist specializing in superconductivity, magnetism, and dielectrics. He is a Professor of physics and T.L.L.... Temple Chair of Science in the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics at the University of Houston. He was the President of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology from 2001 to 2009. Born in Changsha, Hunan, Chu's family was from Taishan, Guangdong Province. He spent his childhood in Taiwan and received his Bachelor of Science degree from National Cheng Kung University in Taiwan in 1962. He earned his Master of Science degree from Fordham University in 1965. He completed his Ph.D. degree at the University of California at San Diego in 1968. After two years of performing industrial research with Bell Laboratories at Murray Hill, New Jersey, Chu was appointed Assistant Professor of Physics at Cleveland State University in 1970. He was subsequently promoted to Associate Professor and Professor of Physics in 1973 and 1975, respectively. He took up an appointment as Professor of Physics at the University of Houston in 1979, which he still holds.
