The College of Business is the business school at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. It offers programs in accountancy, business... administration, and finance. The undergraduate and graduate accounting programs are regularly ranked as the best in the country by U.S. News & World Report. The accounting programs also consistently rank within the top five of the Public Accounting Report. The Chronicle of Higher Education ranked the Department of Finance third in faculty scholarly research productivity. The University Senate approved the College of Commerce and Business Administration on June 9, 1914 at the request of David Kinley, a University Vice-President who would later serve as President of the University of Illinois. The College was officially formed on April 27, 1915 through a vote of the University of Illinois Board of Trustees . The college began with three departments: Economics, Business Organization and Operation, and Transportation. The college underwent a major reorganization which began in 1951. At the time, several faculty from economics wanted their department housed in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences .

The College of Fine and Applied Arts is a multi-disciplinary art school at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The College of Fine and... Since the founding of the University of Illinois in 1867, the visual, performing, and environmental design arts have been an integral part of this institution, playing a distinct role in advancing its mission. Many of the College’s departments started as programs in other colleges, but over the decades the arts at Illinois have grown in size, stature, and notoriety into impressive units that make up a vibrant College — a rich array of disciplines that have come together to shape this campus’s dedication to the arts. On October 3, 1921, a proposal was made by the University Senate to organize the Department of Architecture, the Division of Landscape Architecture, the School of Music and the Department of Art and Design into a College of Fine Arts. A committee, made up of faculty members, was appointed in 1928 to make recommendations, which were approved by the Senate on February 2, 1930.

The College of Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign was first established in 1868, and is considered one of the original... units of the school. The presence of a steam engine on the University's seal is a good clue as to the importance of the engineering program to the University. Engineering at Illinois consistently ranks amongst the top five such engineering colleges in the United States by the U.S. News and World Report and ranks amongst the top three in the world in the Academic Ranking of World Universities. The College of Engineering is located at the northern terminus of the University of Illinois occupying the Bardeen Quadrangle, the Beckman Quadrangle and many nearby areas. Green Street almost perfectly divides the Engineering campus from the rest of the University, so engineers and the College of Engineering are often referred to as "North of Green." Engineering Hall serves as the primary anchor point for the College of Engineering and houses administrative offices as well as academic facilities. Built in 1894, it is the oldest surviving building on the Engineering portion of campus.

University Laboratory High School, or Uni, was established in 1921 and is a laboratory school located on the engineering part of the campus of the... University of Illinois. Its enrollment is approximately 300 students, spanning five years . The school is notable for the achievements of its alumni, including three Nobel laureates and a Pulitzer Prize winner; in 2006 and 2008 it was recognized as a "public elite" school by Newsweek because of its students' high scores on the SAT.. Until the recent SAT testing changes the total SAT scores varied from year to year ranging from 1400 to 1450. Although Uni is located in territory belonging to the Urbana School District, it is not operated by the school district, nor does it receive any property tax revenue from this or any other district. Public funding comes only through the statewide per-pupil distribution financed in the Illinois state budget. Additional funding comes from donations by alumni and parents of current students. Enrollment is competitive, rather than being dependent upon residency in a particular district.

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is the largest college in the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, created in 1913 through the... merger of the College of Literature and Arts and the College of Science. It has nationally ranked programs in chemistry, psychology and speech communications. Its main offices are in Lincoln Hall, and most of the classes that occur on the Main Quad are LAS classes. The college differs from the other colleges on campus in that its students have an extra requirement to fulfill in order to obtain a minor. The college also used to have its own general education requirements that differed from the campus-wide list, but this was eliminated with the university-wide introduction of the UI-Integrate system. LAS administration includes a dean, appointed by the University's Board of Trustees, several associate and assistant deans and directors for various functions. As of the end of 2005 LAS contained 54 constituent departments, more than 17,000 students and 1,300 faculty and staff. The College has published an alumni-targeted periodical, LASNews, since at least 1999.

Founded in 1946, the school is... the second oldest labor and industrial relations school in the nation. Students at Illinois can earn a Masters of Human Resources and Industrial Relations or a PhD in Industrial Relations . The school focuses on the MHRIR program. Until August 2008, LER was known as the Institute of Labor and Industrial Relations. The School of Labor and Employment Relations is located at 504 East Armory Avenue in Champaign, just a couple blocks off the South end of the quad. The facility hosts most of the faculty offices, the administrative offices, two classrooms, interview rooms and conference rooms. As much of the LER program has interdisciplinary ties with law, psychology and business, some classes and faculty are affiliated with those program's facilities as well.

Robert William Holley was an American biochemist, he shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1968 for describing the structure of... alanine transfer RNA, linking DNA and protein synthesis. Holley was born in Urbana, Illinois, and graduated from Urbana High School in 1938. He went on to study chemistry at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, graduating in 1942 and commencing his PhD studies in organic chemistry at Cornell University. During World War II Holley spent two years working under Professor Vincent du Vigneaud at Cornell University Medical College, where he was involved in the first chemical synthesis of penicillin. Holley completed his PhD studies in 1947.*USDA ARS. Following his graduate studies Holley remained associated with Cornell, he became an Assistant Professor of organic chemistry in 1948, and was appointed as Professor of Biochemistry in 1962. He began his research on RNA after spending a years sabbatical studying with James F. Bonner at the California Institute of Technology.

James Barrett Reston , nicknamed "Scotty," was an American journalist whose career spanned the mid 1930s to the early 1990s. He was associated for... many years with the New York Times. Reston was born in Clydebank, Scotland into a poor, devout Scottish-Presbyterian family, which emigrated to the United States in 1920. He sailed with his mother and sister to New York as steerage passengers on board the SS Mobile and they were inspected at Ellis Island on September 28, 1920. After working briefly for the Springfield, Ohio Daily News, he joined the Associated Press in 1934. He moved to the London bureau of the New York Times in 1939, but returned to New York in 1940. In 1942, he took leave of absence to establish a US Office of War Information in London. Rejoining the Times in 1945, Reston was assigned to Washington, D.C., as national correspondent. In 1948, he was appointed diplomatic correspondent, followed by bureau chief and columnist in 1953. Reston married his wife Sally on December 24, 1935, after meeting her at the University of Illinois. He also was a member of Sigma Pi - Phi Chapter at Illinois.

Roger Joseph Ebert is an American film critic and screenwriter. Forbes has described him as "the most powerful pundit in America". He is known for... his film review column and for the television programs Sneak Previews, At the Movies with Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert, and Siskel and Ebert and The Movies, all of which he co-hosted for a combined 23 years with Gene Siskel. After Siskel's death in 1999, Ebert teamed with Richard Roeper for the television series Ebert & Roeper & the Movies, which began airing in 2000. Although his name remained in the title, Ebert did not appear on the show after mid-2006, when he suffered post-surgical complications related to thyroid cancer which left him unable to speak. Ebert ended his association with the show in July 2008, but in February 2009 he stated that he and Roeper would continue their work on a new show. Ebert's movie reviews are syndicated to more than 200 newspapers in the United States and worldwide by Universal Press Syndicate.

Schrieffer was born in Oak Park, Illinois, and his family moved in 1940 to Manhasset, New York, and then in 1947 to Eustis, Florida, where his father a former pharmaceutical salesman began a career in the citrus industry. In his Florida days, Schrieffer enjoyed playing with homemade rockets and ham radio, a hobby that sparked an interest in electrical engineering. After graduating from Eustis High School in 1949, Schrieffer was admitted to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where for two years he majored in electrical engineering before switching to physics in his junior year. He completed a bachelor's thesis on multiplets in heavy atoms under the direction of John C. Slater in 1953. Pursuing an interest in solid-state physics, Schrieffer began graduate studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he was hired immediately as a research assistant to John Bardeen.

Sir Anthony James Leggett, KBE, FRS , aka Tony Leggett, has been a Professor of Physics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign since 1983.... Professor Leggett is widely recognized as a world leader in the theory of low-temperature physics, and his pioneering work on superfluidity was recognized by the 2003 Nobel Prize in Physics. He has shaped the theoretical understanding of normal and superfluid helium liquids and strongly coupled superfluids. He set directions for research in the quantum physics of macroscopic dissipative systems and use of condensed systems to test the foundations of quantum mechanics. He has been particularly interested in the possibility of using special condensed-matter systems, such as Josephson devices, to test the validity of the extrapolation of the quantum formalism to the macroscopic level; this interest has led to a considerable amount of technical work on the application of quantum mechanics to collective variables and in particular on ways of incorporating dissipation into the calculations.

Elias James Corey is an American organic chemist. In 1990 he won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry "for his development of the theory and methodology of... organic synthesis", specifically retrosynthetic analysis. Regarded by many as one of the greatest living chemists, he has developed numerous synthetic reagents, methodologies, and has advanced the science of organic synthesis considerably. He was born to Lebanese immigrants in Methuen, Massachusetts, 50 km north of Boston. His mother changed his name to "Elias" to honor his father who died eighteen months after the birth of his son. His widowed mother, brother, two sisters and an aunt and uncle all lived together in a spacious house—struggling through the depression. He attended Catholic elementary school and Lawrence Public High School. And went on to MIT and got a PHD. Later he traveled out of At MIT, he earned both a bachelor's degree in 1948 and a Ph.D. in 1951. Both degrees were in chemistry. Immediately thereafter, he joined the faculty of University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. In 1959, he moved to Harvard University, where he is currently an emeritus professor of organic chemistry.

Paul Christian Lauterbur was an American chemist who shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2003 with Peter Mansfield for his work... which made the development of magnetic resonance imaging possible. Dr. Lauterbur was a professor along with his wife Joan at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign for 22 years until his death in Urbana. He never stopped working with undergraduates on research, and he served as a professor of chemistry, with appointments in bioengineering, biophysics and computational biology at the Center for Advanced Study. Lauterbur was of Luxembourgish ancestry. Born and raised in Sidney, Ohio, Lauterbur graduated from Sidney High School, where a new Chemistry, Physics, and Biology wing was dedicated in his honor. He did his undergraduate work at Case Institute of Technology in Cleveland, which is now known as Case Western Reserve University. As a teenager, he built his own laboratory in the basement of his parents' house. His chemistry teacher at school understood that he enjoyed experimenting on his own, so the teacher allowed him to do his own experiments at the back of class.
