The University of Iowa College of Law is one of the eleven professional graduate schools at the University of Iowa, located in Iowa City, Iowa.... Founded in 1865, it is the oldest law school in continuous operation west of the Mississippi River. The law school was ranked as the 29th best law school in the United States in the 2012 U.S. News and World Report Best Law School rankings. The law school is consistently ranked in the top ten most distinguished public law schools in the US. The law school offers a rich curriculum covering the full range of contemporary legal education, with an especially significant concentration of courses organized in 2 areas: the International and Comparative Law Program , and the Innovation, Business & Law Program. The College has a strong program of clinical legal education, and it offers a small but well regarded LLM program in International and Comparative Law. In conjunction with the change in deans in 2004, the law school has embraced the opportunity to engage in substantial curriculum reform, especially in the first year curriculum and LAWR instructors.

The Tippie College of Business at The University of Iowa, established as the College of Commerce in 1921, is one of the oldest and top ranked... business schools in the United States. The College was the first academic division at the University of Iowa to be named for an alumnus, Henry B. Tippie, a 1949 accounting graduate from Belle Plaine, Iowa. The College is housed in the Pappajohn Business Building on the university's Iowa City campus, named for Des Moines venture capitalist John Pappajohn, a 1952 graduate of the College. The Tippie Master of Business Administration program consistently ranks near the top of the Forbes Magazine listing of fastest payback on an MBA degree.. Financial Times ranks the school overall at number 32 in US and 64 in the world, while the ranking it number 1 in US for placement percentage. It is also among the top twenty programs at a public university by The Economist and 40th best in the country by US News and World Report. The Tippie College undergraduate program was ranked 68th in the nation by Business Week Magazine in 2007, down from 39th in 2006.

James Alfred Van Allen was an American space scientist at the University of Iowa. The Van Allen radiation belts were named after him, following the... 1958 satellite missions in which Van Allen had argued that a Geiger counter should be used to detect charged particles. In 1950 an event occurred that began small but was to affect the future of Van Allen and all his countrymen. In March, British Physicist Sydney Chapman dropped in on Van Allen [and] remarked that he would like to meet other scientists in the Washington area. Van Allen got on the phone, soon gathered eight or ten top scientists in the living room of his small brick house. ‘It was what you might call a pedigreed bull session,’ he says. The talk turned to geophysics and the two ‘International Polar Years’ that had enlisted the world’s leading nations to study the Arctic and Antarctic regions in 1882 and 1932. Someone suggested that with the development of new tools such as rockets, radar and computers, the time was ripe for a worldwide geophysical year.

Frank Luther Mott was an American historian and journalist of Quaker descent. Mott was born in Rose Hill, Iowa. He taught English at Simpson College... in Indianola, Iowa and was the head of the Journalism Department at the University of Iowa for twenty years until his appointment as Dean of the University of Missouri 's School of Journalism in 1942. he may have coined the term photojournalism in 1924, Mott was influential in the development of photojournalism education: the first photojournalism class was taught at UI during his tenure, and the first photojournalism program, directed by Clifton C. Edom, started at MU in 1943 upon his request. His book, A History of American Magazines, won the 1939 Pulitzer Prize for History; and Volume 4 of said work won the Bancroft Prize in 1958. Mott served as president of Kappa Tau Alpha from 1937–1939. He died in Columbia, Missouri.

William Matthews was an American poet and essayist. Raised in Cincinnati, Ohio, Matthews attended Berkshire School and later earned a bachelor's... degree from Yale University as well as a master's from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In addition to serving as a Writer-in-Residence at Boston's Emerson College, Matthews held various academic positions at institutions including Cornell University, the University of Washington at Seattle, the University of Colorado at Boulder, and the University of Iowa. He served as president of Associated Writing Programs and of the Poetry Society of America. At the time of his death he was a professor of English and director of the creative writing program at City College of New York A reading series has been named for him at City College of New York. His sons are Sebastian Matthews and Bill Matthews. During his 27 years as an author, Matthews received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Arts.
