The Melbourne School of Land and Environment is a faculty of the University of Melbourne and is an important provider of Australian agricultural... education, and is the largest of its type in that country. It was officially created on 1 July 1997 as a combination of most of the agricultural, forestry, horticulture and food science higher education in Victoria, Australia. Its founding brought together the Victorian College of Agriculture and Horticulture and the University of Melbourne's departments of Agriculture and Forestry. In 2005, the University divested itself of the Longerenong, Glenormiston and McMillan sites. It also began to outsource much of the training provided at the other sites. In 2005, the Institute of Land and Food Resources was renamed to the Faculty of Land and Food Resources.

The Faculty of the VCA and Music is a faculty of the University of Melbourne, in Victoria . VCAM is located near the Melbourne central business... district, on two campuses, one - the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music - on the Parkville campus of the University of Melbourne, and the other - the Victorian College of the Arts - on St Kilda Road, at Southbank. Courses and training offered at the VCA cover six academic disciplines: fine art, dance, drama, film and television, music and production, alongside the Centre for Ideas and The Wilin Centre for Indigenous Arts and Cultural Development. Degree programs specialising in music performance, composition, musicology, ethnomusicology, conducting, pedagogy and music therapy are taught at the Conservatorium, which also runs an Early Music Studio, and oversees the publishing house Lyrebird Press. Both campuses offer graduate programs including certificates and diplomas, and research and coursework awards at the masters and doctoral levels. The library on the Southbank campus is known as the Lenton Parr Music, Visual and Performing Arts Library, whilst that at Parkville is the Louise Hanson-Dyer Music Library.

Ormond College is the largest of the residential colleges of the University of Melbourne. It is home to 332 undergraduates, 34 graduates and 27... professorial and academic residents. The University of Melbourne was established by an act of the Parliament of Victoria in 1853. Seventy-five of the one hundred acres of the university site were set aside for residential colleges, to be founded under the auspices of the churches. Ten acres each were allotted to the Anglican, Presbyterian, Methodist and Roman Catholic churches, the remaining area being reserved for sporting facilities. The Anglican Church was the first to accept the offer and Trinity College opened in 1872. At the end of August 1877, Alexander Morrison, Headmaster of Scotch College and convenor of the Presbyterian Church Assembly's Committee to "watch over the land", received a letter from the Director of the Victorian Education Department, proposing that if the church did not mean to take the land for a college, that it be sold and the proceeds divided, half to the church, and half to the state for university purposes. This spurred Morrison into action.

St Hilda's College is a college of The University of Melbourne, providing a residential community for students from all parts of regional Victoria,... interstate and overseas. It provides accommodation, academic and pastoral support for 178 undergraduate students and 20 graduate students. 15 Residential tutors are also accommodated in the College. St Hilda’s College was established as a result of the inspiration of Dr E.H. Sugden, the first Master of Queen’s College, who in 1888, at the Official Opening of Queen’s, stated: “I hope we soon have a hostel for women in these grounds”. Between 1888 and 1957 there were a number of attempts to establish a residential college to provide for the needs of the increasing numbers of young Methodist and Presbyterian women who were coming to Melbourne to undertake tertiary study. However it was not until 1957 when a provisional council was established and then 1959 when a group of church and university women began a fundraising campaign that the idea started to become a reality.

Trinity College is the oldest college of the University of Melbourne. Founded in 1872 on a site granted to the Church of England as a residential... college of the University of Melbourne, Trinity is unique among Australian university colleges in its diverse education programs. In addition to its resident community of around 300 students and tutors of the university, Trinity includes three other major educational programs: Trinity College Foundation Studies, which prepares 700–800 international students for admission to the University of Melbourne annually; the Trinity College Theological School, an Anglican theological college affiliated with the MCD University of Divinity; and the Trinity Institute, which runs summer and winter schools for young leaders as well as other learning and leadership programs. Trinity College was founded in 1872 by the first Anglican Bishop of Melbourne, Charles Perry. The college was affiliated with the University of Melbourne in 1876. The Trinity College Theological School was founded in 1877.

Whitley College is one of the twelve residential colleges of the University of Melbourne. Unlike most colleges, Whitley College is not located on... college crescent but rather is placed slightly further north at 271 Royal Parade, Victoria, Australia. Also unlike the other colleges associated with the university , Whitley College is unique that alongside its residential college there also exists a theological school associated with the Baptist Union of Victoria. Whitley College was established in 1891 at the Collins Street Baptist Church. Dr W.T. Whitley was invited to come to Melbourne from England to take up the position of Principal. He remained Principal for the next ten years. In 1959, the Baptist Union of Victoria began work on a new building for the college and agreed to become an affiliated college of the University of Melbourne. The College is now one of 12 residential colleges associated with the University of Melbourne.

Melbourne Business School is a business school located in Melbourne, Australia. MBS has four campuses: Melbourne Business School began in 1954 when... the University of Melbourne offered Australia’s first residential executive education program in the summer of that year. Its first Master of Business Administration degree was awarded in 1965, which was also the first MBA degree awarded in Australia. During the 1980s, MBS was awarded the status of a National Management School by the Australian Government and the Graduate School of Management was established within the University of Melbourne. In 1989, it was re-organized again, this time as the Graduate School of Management Ltd: a non-profit company limited by guarantee and managed by a Board of Directors which includes the chairs and directors of leading Australian corporations. This organization structure has helped create a major link between the university and those who have a responsibility for management. It is currently co-owned by the University of Melbourne and Australian businesses .

Sir Frank Macfarlane Burnet, OM, AK, KBE, FRS , usually known as Macfarlane or Mac Burnet, was an Australian virologist best known for his... contributions to immunology. He won the Nobel prize for predicting acquired immune tolerance and was best known for developing the theory of clonal selection. Burnet received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Melbourne in 1924, and his PhD from the University of London in 1928. He went on to conduct pioneering research in microbiology and immunology at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research, Melbourne, and served as director of the Institute from 1944 to 1965. From 1965 until his retirement in 1978, Burnet worked at the University of Melbourne. Throughout his career he played an active role in the development of public policy for the medical sciences in Australia and was a founding member of the Australian Academy of Science , and served as its president from 1965 to 1969.

Sir John Carew Eccles, AC FRS FRACP FRSNZ FAAS was an Australian neurophysiologist who won the 1963 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his... work on the synapse. He shared the prize with Andrew Huxley and Alan Lloyd Hodgkin. Eccles was born in Melbourne, Australia. He grew up there with his two sisters and his parents: William and Mary Carew Eccles . He initially attended Warrnambool High School , then completed his final year of schooling at Melbourne High School. Aged 17, he was awarded a senior scholarship to study medicine at the University of Melbourne. As a medical undergraduate, he was never able to find a satisfactory explanation for the interaction of mind and body; he started to think about becoming a neuroscientist. He graduated in 1925, and was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship to study under Charles Scott Sherrington at Magdalen College, Oxford University, where he received his Doctor of Philosophy in 1929.

Elizabeth Helen Blackburn, AC, FRS is an Australian-born American biological researcher at the University of California, San Francisco, who studies... the telomere, a structure at the end of chromosomes that protects the chromosome. Blackburn co-discovered telomerase, the enzyme that replenishes the telomere. Blackburn recalls: "Carol had done this experiment, and we sat down, just in the lab, and I remember sort of standing there, and she had this -- we call it a bum. It's an autoradiogram, because there was trace amounts of radioactivity that were used to develop an image of the separated DNA products of what turned out to be the telomerase enzyme reaction. I remember looking at it and just thinking, ‘Ah! This could be very big. This looks just right.’ It had a pattern to it. There was a regularity to it. There was something that was not just sort of garbage there, and that was really kind of coming through, even though we look back at it now, we'd say, technically, there was this, that and the other, but it was a pattern shining through, and it just had this sort of sense, ‘Ah! There's something real here.

Richard Gardiner Casey, Baron Casey KG GCMG CH DSO MC KStJ PC was an Australian politician and diplomat, who served as the colonial governor of... Bengal between 1944 and 1946 and as the 16th Governor-General of Australia between 7 May 1965 and 30 April 1969. Casey was born in Brisbane, Queensland. His father, also named Richard Gardiner Casey, was a wealthy pastoralist and Queensland state politician of Irish descent. His mother, Evelyn, was the daughter of George Harris, another wealthy pastoralist and Queensland state politician. His father moved the family to Melbourne in 1893 and became a rich company director. Casey was educated at Cumloden School, St Kilda, and at Melbourne Grammar School. He enrolled for first year engineering at the University of Melbourne in 1909, but then travelled to Trinity College, Cambridge, where he completed a Bachelor of Arts in 1913, graduating with second-class honours in the mechanical sciences tripos and a Master of Arts in 1918. At the outbreak of World War I in 1914, Casey joined the First Australian Imperial Force as a lieutenant, and served at Gallipoli as aide-de-camp to Major General Sir William Bridges.

Damien Francis Broderick is an Australian science fiction and popular science writer. His science fiction novel The Judas Mandala is sometimes... credited with the first appearance of the term "virtual reality," and his 1997 popular science book The Spike was the first to investigate the technological Singularity in detail. Broderick holds a Ph.D. in Literary Studies from Deakin University, Australia, with a dissertation relating to the comparative semiotics of scientific, literary, and science fictional textuality. He is a Senior Fellow in the School of Culture and Communication at the University of Melbourne. Broderick lives in San Antonio, Texas, with his wife, tax attorney Barbara Lamar. He was the founding science fiction editor of the Australian popular-science magazine Cosmos from mid-2005 to December 2010. Five of Broderick's books have won Ditmar Awards ; the first, The Dreaming Dragons, was runner-up for the John W. Campbell Memorial Award for Best Science Fiction Novel. He has also won the Aurealis award four times.
