The University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance is an undergraduate and graduate institution for the performing arts in the United... States. It is part of the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. The School of Music, Theatre & Dance was founded in 1880 and is currently headed by Christopher Kendall, dean. Sigma Alpha Iota International Music Fraternity was founded at the School of Music on June 12, 1903. Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity's Epsilon Chapter was formed at the School of Music in 1902. The Nu chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi, honorary band fraternity, was formed in 1925, and the Lambda chapter of Tau Beta Sigma, honorary band sorority, was formed in 1948. With the exception of the Department of Dance, the School is located on the University of Michigan's North Campus, which is also home to the College of Engineering, the School of Information, and the Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning. The school was named "School of Music", until July 1, 2006, when it was changed to "School of Music, Theatre & Dance". Fifteen departments make up the School of Music, Theatre & Dance.

The University of Michigan College of Literature, Science, and the Arts is the liberal arts and sciences unit of the University of Michigan in Ann... Arbor, Michigan, U.S. Established in 1841 with seven students and two teachers, the college is currently the largest unit at U-M in terms of the number of students enrolled. It is located on the university's Central Campus, which it shares with the Ross School of Business, the School of Information, the Law School, and other colleges. It is also home to the University of Michigan Honors Program. The Residential College is a division of the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts. Students commonly refer to the Residential College as "the RC". Charlie Bright is the director of the RC and also a professor of history; 86 faculty and staff at the University are associated with the RC, including nine Academic Advisors and four administrators. Students in the RC take classes in LS&A as well as specially-designed RC courses, many of which are seminar courses with fewer than fifteen students each. All RC students are required to live in the same residence hall, East Quadrangle, for at least their first two years.

The Stephen M. Ross School of Business is the business school of the University of Michigan. Numerous publications have ranked the Ross School of... The school was founded in 1924. Some highlights from its recent history: B. Joseph White became dean in 1990, and began a transformation of the School's character and image. He led a major MBA curriculum overhaul, which aimed to intensify the development of students' professional and practical skills, teamwork, leadership, and overall ability to turn knowledge and ideas into action. The signature innovation, called MAP , puts students into "live cases" inside companies for seven weeks.

The School of Information is part of a growing list of i-schools devoted to the study of information as a discipline. These institutions have varied histories, some being newly created, others developing from earlier schools or departments focused on library and information science , computer science, communications, or information technology. The school was the first of these institutions to relabel itself a "school of information". In 2008, the School of Information, College of Literature, Science, and the Arts and the College of Engineering unveiled a new undergraduate major called informatics.

Michigan UM SPH is one of the oldest schools of public health in the country and is also considered one of the most prestigious schools focusing on health in the United States. Founded in 1941, the University of Michigan School of Public Health grew out of the University of Michigan's degree programs in public health, some of which date back to the 19th century. The University of Michigan Health System is the wholly owned academic medical center of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. UMHS includes the... U-M Medical School, with its Faculty Group Practice and many research laboratories; the U-M Hospitals and Health Centers, which includes University Hospital, C.S. Mott Children's Hospital, Von Voigtlander Women's Hospital, 120 outpatient clinics and approximately 40 health centers; the clinical programs of the U-M School of Nursing; and the activities of the Michigan Health Corporation, through which UMHS partners with other medical centers and hospitals to provide specialized care throughout Michigan. In July 2011, the University of Michigan Hospitals & Health Centers finished its 15th straight fiscal year in the black, with an operating margin of 2.1 percent on revenues of $2.1 billion. In 2010, the Hospitals and Health Centers attained an operating margin of 3.21 percent on revenues of about $1.97 billion. As a not-for-profit entity, UMHS uses positive operating margins to fund continued advances in patient care, education, research, and the facilities needed to support these functions.

The A. Alfred Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning is an undergraduate and graduate institution for the built environment at the... University of Michigan. Formerly known as the College of Architecture and Urban Planning, the college was named after real estate developer and philanthropist A. Alfred Taubman when he donated $30 million to the college in May 1999. The gift was one of the largest in the history of the University of Michigan and the largest ever to a school of architecture. For 2011, the college's Master of Architecture program was ranked number 1 by DesignIntelligence. In 1876, the University of Michigan became one of the first universities in the United States to offer courses in architecture, led by influential Chicago architect William Le Baron Jenney. After thirty years, a degree program within the Department of Engineering was established in 1906, under the direction of Emil Lorch, who served to administer the program and its ever-evolving iterations until 1937. Housed in what is now Lorch Hall on Central Campus, the program quickly grew into the Department of Architecture by 1913.

Richard Errett Smalley was the Gene and Norman Hackerman Professor of Chemistry and a Professor of Physics and Astronomy at Rice University, in... Houston, Texas. In 1996, along with Robert Curl, also a professor of chemistry at Rice, and Harold Kroto, a professor at the University of Sussex, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the discovery of a new form of carbon, buckminsterfullerene , and was a leading advocate of nanotechnology and its many applications, including its use in creating strong but lightweight materials as well as its potential to fight cancer. Smalley, the youngest of 4 siblings, was born in Akron, Ohio, and grew up in Kansas City, Missouri. Smalley attended Hope College before transferring to the University of Michigan where he received his B.S. in 1965. Between his studies, he worked in industry, where he developed his unique managerial style. He received his Ph.D. from Princeton University in 1973. He completed postdoctoral work at the University of Chicago, with Lennard Wharton and Donald Levy, where he was a pioneer in the development of supersonic beam laser spectroscopy.

Hugh David Politzer is an American theoretical physicist. He shared the 2004 Nobel Prize in Physics with David Gross and Frank Wilczek for their... discovery of asymptotic freedom in quantum chromodynamics. Politzer was born in New York City in family of Hungarian descent. He graduated from the Bronx High School of Science in 1966, received his bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan in 1969, and his PhD in 1974 from Harvard University, where his graduate advisor was Sidney Coleman. In his first published article, which appeared in 1973, Politzer described the phenomenon of asymptotic freedom: the closer quarks are to each other, the weaker the strong interaction will be between them. When quarks are in extreme proximity, the nuclear force between them is so weak that they behave almost like free particles. This result—independently discovered at around the same time by Gross and Wilczek at Princeton University—was extremely important in the development of quantum chromodynamics.

Samuel Chao Chung Ting is an American physicist who received the Nobel Prize in 1976, with Burton Richter, for discovering the subatomic J/ψ... particle. He is the principal investigator for the international $1.5 billion Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer experiment which was installed on the International Space Station on 19 May 2011. Samuel Ting was born on January 27, 1936, in Ann Arbor, Michigan. His parents, Kuan-hai Ting and Tsun-ying Jeanne Wang , met and married as graduate students at the University of Michigan. His father's family were from Rizhao County in the Shandong province of China. Samuel's parents returned to China two months after his birth. Due to the Japanese invasion, Samuel's education was disrupted, and he was mostly home-schooled by his parents. After the war, his parents became professors of engineering and psychology at National Taiwan University in Taipei, Taiwan. From 1948, Samuel attended the prestigious Provincial Chien-Kuo High School in Taipei.

Robin Givhan is the former fashion editor for The Washington Post. She left The Washington Post in 2010 and is now the fashion critic and fashion... correspondent for The Daily Beast and Newsweek. She won the 2006 Pulitzer Prize for criticism, the first such time for a fashion writer. The Pulitzer Committee explained its rationale by noting Givhan's "witty, closely observed essays that transform fashion criticism into cultural criticism." The native of Detroit, Michigan was valedictorian at Renaissance High School in 1982, graduated from Princeton University in 1986, and holds a master's degree in journalism from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. After working for the Detroit Free Press for about seven years, she held positions at the San Francisco Chronicle and Vogue magazine. She has been employed on and off with The Post for more than 10 years. She moved from New York City to Washington, D.C. in 2009 where her fashion beat was expanded to also cover First Lady Michelle Obama. Givhan appeared as a guest on The Colbert Report in January 2006.

Hyman Bass is an American mathematician, known for work in algebra and in mathematics education. From 1959-1998 he was Professor in the Mathematics... Department at Columbia University, where he is now professor emeritus. He is currently the Roger Lyndon Collegiate Professor of Mathematics and Professor of Mathematics Education at the University of Michigan. Born in Houston, Texas, he earned his B.A. in 1955 from Princeton University and his Ph.D. in 1959 from the University of Chicago. His thesis, titled Global dimensions of rings, was written under the supervision of Irving Kaplansky. He has held visiting appointments at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, IHES and ENS , Tata Institute , University of Cambridge, UC Berkeley, University of Rome, IMPA , National Autonomous University of Mexico, Mittag-Leffler Institute , and the University of Utah. He was president of the American Mathematical Society. Bass formerly chaired the Mathematical Sciences Education Board at the National Academy of Sciences, and the Committee on Education of the American Mathematical Society.
