Odd Hassel was a Norwegian physical chemist and Nobel Laureate. Odd Hassel was born on May 17, 1897 in Christiana , Norway. His father Ernst Hassel... died while Hassel was only eight years old. Hassel had a twin brother, Leif. This left his mother, Mathilde Klaveness to raise Hassel and his three brothers and one sister. Hassel attended the University of Oslo in 1915 to study chemistry. In the beginning of World War II, Germany invaded Norway and sent the staff of the University of Oslo, including Hassel, to an internment camp. Hassel continued his research until his freedom in 1944. After his retirement in 1964, Hassel continued his research. It was not until 1969 that the Nobel Prize in chemistry with Barton for their work in the 1940s. By this time, Hassel had already received the Fridtjof Nansen Award of Sciences as well as the Guldberg-Waage medal from the Norwegian Chemical Society in 1964. Hassel died on May 15, 1981. Odd Hassel was a Norwegian physical chemist who established the three-dimensionality of molecular geometry.

Christian Lous Lange was a Norwegian historian, teacher, and political scientist. He was one of the world's foremost exponents of the theory and... practice of internationalism. He was born in Stavanger; his father was a military engineer. He graduated from secondary school in 1887 and proceeded to travel and study history, English, and French at the University of Oslo, from which he received the cand. philol. degree in 1893. He taught at secondary schools for many years and eventually returned to the University of Oslo to receive a doctorate. In 1899, he had his first official role in the internationalist movement when he was appointed secretary of the committee organizing an Oslo conference of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, an organization dedicated to fostering discussion between parliamentarians of different countries. The next year, he was made secretary of the Nobel Committee of the Norwegian Parliament and, although he gave up the position in 1909, he would play a key role in the early days of the Norwegian Nobel Institute. During this time he was the Norwegian technical delegate to the Second Hague Peace Conference.

Gerd Mjøen Brantenberg is a Norwegian author, teacher, and feminist writer. She is also the cousin of radio and TV entertainer Lars Mjøen.... Her most famous novel is Egalias døtre , which was published in 1977 in Norway. In the novel the female is defined as the normal and the male as the abnormal, subjugated sex. All words that are normally in masculine form are given in a feminine form, and vice versa. Brantenberg was born in Oslo, but grew up in Fredrikstad. She studied English, History, and Sociology in London, Edinburgh, and Oslo. She has an English hovedfag , from the University of Oslo, where she also studied history and political science. She worked as a lector in Norwegian and Danish high schools, and she also held positions at the trade union for lectors and the Norwegian Authors' Union. Since 1982 she has been a writer full-time. She worked from 1972-1983 in the Women's House in Oslo. She was a board member of the Norway's first association for homosexual people Forbundet av 1948, the precursor to the Norwegian National Association for Lesbian and Gay Liberation.

Ole-Johan Dahl was a Norwegian computer scientist and is considered to be one of the fathers of Simula and object-oriented programming along with... Kristen Nygaard. Dahl, born in Mandal, Norway, is widely accepted as Norway’s foremost computer scientist. With Kristen Nygaard, he produced the initial ideas for object-oriented programming in the 1960s at the Norwegian Computing Center as part of the Simula I and Simula 67 simulation programming languages. Dahl and Nygaard were the first to develop the concepts of class, subclass , inheritance, dynamic object creation, etc., all important aspects of the OO paradigm. An object is a self-contained component in a software system. These are combined to form a complete system. The object-oriented approach is now pervasive in modern software development, including widely used imperative programming languages such as Java and C++. Dahl became a full professor at the University of Oslo in 1968 and was a gifted teacher as well as researcher.

Fridtjof Wedel-Jarlsberg Nansen was a Norwegian explorer, scientist, diplomat, humanitarian and Nobel Peace Prize laureate. In his youth a champion... skier and ice skater, he led the team that made the first crossing of the Greenland interior in 1888, and won international fame after reaching a record northern latitude of 86°14′ during his North Pole expedition of 1893–96. Although he retired from exploration after his return to Norway, his techniques of polar travel and his innovations in equipment and clothing influenced a generation of subsequent Arctic and Antarctic expeditions. Nansen studied zoology at the Royal Frederick University, and later worked as a curator at the Bergen Museum where his research on the central nervous system of lower marine creatures earned him a doctorate and helped establish modern theories of neurology. After 1896 his main scientific interest switched to oceanography; in the course of his research he made many scientific cruises, mainly in the North Atlantic, and contributed to the development of modern oceanographic equipment.

Knut Kjeldstadli is a Norwegian historian. He took his doctorate in 1989 with the paper Jerntid. Fabrikksystem og arbeidere ved Christiania... Spigerverk og Kværner Brug fra om lag 1890 til 1940. He became adjunct professor at the University of Bergen in 1992, and then professor at the University of Oslo in 1996. He is a member of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters. Kjeldstadli is also involved in politics, in the Socialist Left Party as well as ATTAC. Kjeldstadli was awarded the Brage Prize in 2003 for serving as editor of Norsk innvandringshistorie. He was the son of historian Sverre Kjeldstadli, paternal grandson of trade unionist Lars Kjeldstadli, maternal grandson of editor Daniel Grini and grandnephew of politician Sigvart Grini.

Berit Ås is a Norwegian politician, Professor Emerita of social psychology at the University of Oslo, and feminist. She was the first leader of... the Socialist Left Party and served as a Member of Parliament 1973–1977. She was also a deputy member of parliament 1969–1973  and 1977–1981 . She is known internationally for articulating the Master suppression techniques. Ås' parents were teachers. Her mother and maternal grandmother were both politically active, and her father was an avid reader and inventor. She completed her university degree in 1953 and worked on issues related to smoking hazards, consumer protection, children's safety, and housing. She taught and conducted research on women's issues at the University of Oslo, where she was an Assistant Professor of Psychology 1969–1980, Associate Professor 1980–1991 and full Professor of Social Psychology from 1991 until she retired in 1994.
