The Faculty occupies a heavy masonry building on College Street that was once the university's School of Dentistry. By breaking open the façade, the architects have created visual connections between a new gallery, the library, and the street. The bold new window, with its large sheets of glass, changes the scale of the building projecting the new identity of the school of design to the city.

Emmanuel College is a theological college of Victoria University at the University of Toronto. Affiliated with the United Church, it is a member... institution of the Toronto School of Theology. The principal is the Rev. Dr Mark G. Toulouse. Emmanuel College is a member of the Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada. Emmanuel College has its origins in Victoria College, a Methodist college founded in 1836.. When the merger to create The United Church of Canada took place in 1925, a number of congregations in the Presbyterian Church in Canada chose to remain a distinct denomination. Knox College, University of Toronto, was expected to serve as the new church's main seminary. However, the Legislative Assembly of Ontario awarded it to the continuing Presbyterians. The faculty and most students of Knox left to form "Union College" with the Faculty of Theology at Victoria. Shortly renamed Emmanuel College, the new college became affiliated with the University of Toronto as a United Church of Canada seminary in 1925. The Emmanuel College, Toronto main building was designed by architect Henry Sproatt.

New College is one of the four constituent Colleges of the University of Toronto in Canada. Founded in 1962, New College was the first college to be created within the University of Toronto since the federation with Victoria, Trinity and St. Michael's Colleges. The name of the College was initially to be "New King's College," an homage to University College, which had been known as King's College before receiving new royal charter. New College shares with Trinity College, St. Hilda's College, and University College, the distinction of being Dominion cousins to namesakes in the UK. It is named after New College at the University of Oxford, in Britain, upon which the College system at the University of Toronto is itself modelled.

University College is a constituent college of the University of Toronto, created in 1853 specifically as an institution of higher learning free of... religious affiliation. It was the founding member of the university's modern collegiate system, and its secularism contrasted with contemporary colleges such as Trinity College and St. Michael's College, both of which later became part of the University of Toronto. University College is one of two places in the University of Toronto that has been designated a National Historic Site, along with Annesley Hall of Victoria College. It is home to the oldest student government in Canada, the Literary and Athletic Society. Shortly after taking power in the first responsible government of the Province of Canada, Reformist politicians led by Robert Baldwin wrested control of King's College from the Church of England in 1849 and renamed it the University of Toronto. Baldwin envisioned that denominational colleges would soon decide to affiliate themselves under the secular University of Toronto "with some vague status, perhaps as divinity halls". His hopes were dashed when the Presbyterian Queen's College in Kingston opted to stay independent.

The university originally opened its medical school in 1843, providing instruction in medicine and medical sciences. In 1853, it suspended the school's teaching program and transferred teaching duties to the city's three proprietary schools: Trinity Medical College, the Toronto School of Medicine and Woman's Medical College. Because proprietary schools could not grant degrees, the university's medical school retained the responsibility of holding examinations and conferring medical degrees. As the university kept raising its standards, the medical examinations became increasingly rigorous and scientific.

Knox College is a postgraduate theological college of the University of Toronto in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It was founded in 1844 as part of a... schism movement in the Church of Scotland following the Disruption. Knox is presently affiliated with the Presbyterian Church in Canada and confers doctoral degrees as a member school of the Toronto School of Theology. Controversy arising from the issue of state control in the Church of Scotland led to the Disruption of 1843 and the establishment of the Free Church of Scotland. In response, several Presbyterian ministers and congregations within the Canadian synod of the Church of Scotland switched their affiliation to the new denomination. Queen's College, a Presbyterian seminary in Kingston, decided in 1844 to remain affiliated with the Church of Scotland, prompting some of its students to defect and establish Knox College in Toronto. Named for Scottish Reformation theologian John Knox, the new college became affiated with the Free Church. The first class included 14 students and took place on November 5, 1844, in the home of Rev. Henry Esson on James Street, at the present site of Toronto Eaton Centre.

The Faculty of Information is a graduate unit within the University of Toronto and is devoted to the study of information science. It is located on... St. George Campus, in the Claude Bissell building, at 140 St. George Street, which is attached to John P. Robarts Research Library. The FI was originally founded as the University of Toronto Library School within the Ontario College of Education in 1928 and was housed at 315 Bloor Street. In 1965, the School was designated as an independent unit within the university and and became known as the School of Library Science and thus moved it quarters to 167 College Street and 256 McCaul Street. In 1971, SLS moved again to its present location at 140 St. George Street . In 1972, the name changed to the Faculty of Library Science , as the school attained faculty status . The names was changed again to the Faculty of Library and Information Science in 1982 and then the Faculty of Information Studies in 1994 . In 2004, FIS joined the iSchool Caucus and accordingly in 2008, it was renamed the Faculty of Information , also identifying itself as "the iSchool at Toronto".

Established in 1887, the University of Toronto Faculty of Law is one of the oldest professional faculties at the University of Toronto. The law school has been consistently acclaimed as the best school in Canada by comprehensive rankings. The median undergraduate GPA of students accepted into the J.D. program is 3.9, and the median Law School Admission Test score is 168 , making the law school the most selective in Canada, and one of the most selective in North America. The Faculty of Law offers its students Canada's most extensive internship program in pro bono work and international human rights law, and supports a range of legal clinics staffed by students as well as practitioners. The Faculty of Law has close to 60 full-time faculty members, and 600 undergraduate and graduate students, giving it a student-faculty ratio of approximately 10:1, one of the lowest in North America. Its "Distinguished Visitors" program brings 15-25 short-term visiting professors from the world's leading law schools to teach at the school each year.

Victoria College is a federated college of the University of Toronto, founded in 1836 and named for Queen Victoria. It is commonly called Victoria... University, informally Vic, after the original academic component that now forms its undergraduate division. Since 1928, Victoria College has retained secular studies in the liberal arts and sciences while Emmanuel College has functioned as its postgraduate theological college. Victoria is situated in the northeastern part of the university campus, adjacent to St. Michael's College and Queen's Park. Among its residential halls is Annesley Hall, a National Historic Site of Canada. A major centre for Reformation and Renaissance studies, Victoria is home to international scholarly projects and holdings devoted to pre-Puritan English drama and the works of Desiderius Erasmus. Victoria College was originally founded as the Upper Canada Academy by the Wesleyan Methodist Church. In 1831, a church committee decided to locate the academy on four acres of land in Cobourg, Ontario, east of Toronto, because of its central location in a large town and access by land and water.

Ewart College was a historical women's college located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, affiliated with the Presbyterian Church in Canada. In September... 1991, it merged with Knox College, University of Toronto. Founded on October 11, 1897, it was then called the Ewart Missionary Training Home, later to be renamed the Presbyterian Missionary and Deaconess Training School. After a new building was constructed in 1960, it was renamed for Catherine Seaton Ewart; that building, located at 156 St. George Street, is now home to Ernescliff College. Founded by women, the original purpose of Ewart was to prepare women for missionary service. In later years, it focused on diaconal ministry and Christian and lay education. Following the Presbyterian Church in Canada's decision to ordain women as Ministers in 1966, the college admitted male students in the 1970s, and in 1991, along with the merger with Knox College, many Ewart graduates have taken further studies to become ordained within the Presbyterian Church. Ewart Chapel, housed within the Chapel at Knox College, is named after Ewart College, along with the McKay Educational Resource Room.

The Joseph L. Rotman School of Management commonly known as Rotman School of Management is the University of Toronto's business school, located in... St. George Street in Downtown Toronto. The school, named after Joseph L. Rotman, was established in 1950 as Institute of Business Administration though the University of Toronto has been offering undergraduate courses in management since 1902. The school offers undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs in business administration, finance and commerce, including full-time, part-time and executive MBA programs along with a Master of Finance course and a doctoral program, the Rotman PhD. Additionally, in collaboration with other schools at the university, it offers combined MBA degrees with the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering; and Collaborative Programs in Asia-Pacific Studies and Environmental Studies. The faculty, 72 per cent of which is international, is currently ranked 16th in the world by the Financial Times for its research output. Out of 113 faculty members, 98% have doctorates.

The Toronto School of Theology is an ecumenical centre for graduate theological education and the largest of its kind in Canada. Affiliated with the... University of Toronto, the TST comprises seven member colleges in the Roman Catholic, Anglican, and Reformed traditions, as well as four affiliated institutions attached to smaller denominations. It is accredited by the Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada. The school was originally constituted as the Toronto Graduate School of Theological Studies in 1944, in order to promote collaboration around advance degree programs among the theology schools affiliated with the University of Toronto. In 1970 this was further formalised with the establishment of the Toronto School of Theology. Finally, in 1979 a Memorandum of Agreement with the University of Toronto made it possible for the member schools to grant conjoint basic and advanced degrees in theology. The Toronto School of Theology's Arms and Flag were registered with the Canadian Heraldic Authority on March 1, 2001 The Greek word ÓYNEPÃOYNTEÓ, which is the School motto, is taken from 2 Corinthians 6.

Wycliffe College is an Anglican Church of Canada seminary federated with the University of Toronto. It is evangelical and Low church in orientation.... On the other hand, the University of Toronto's other Anglican college, the University of Trinity College is Anglo-Catholic in outlook. While being an Anglican seminary, Wycliffe College attracts students from many Christian denominations. As a founding member of the Toronto School of Theology, students are free to participate in the wide range of courses from Canada's largest ecumenical consortium. It trains those pursuing ordination as well as those preparing for academic careers of scholarship and teaching. The Anglican seminary was founded in 1877 as the Protestant Episcopal Divinity School, by the Church Association of the Diocese of Toronto, a lay Evangelical group at the Cathedral Church of St. James. The name Wycliffe College, inspired by the English theologian John Wycliffe, was given first to the college's building and then to the college itself. To ensure its long-term viability, Wycliffe College began considering various forms of union with the University of Toronto towards the end of the 19th century.

Innis College is one of the constituent colleges of the University of Toronto. It is one of the University of Toronto's smallest colleges in terms of... size and the second smallest college in terms of population with approximately 1870 registered students. It is located in the campus' historic west end, directly north of Robarts Library, and is named after prominent University of Toronto political economist Harold Innis. The College includes a fully equipped cinema known as Innis Town Hall, which hosts numerous film festivals, free film screenings, and a variety of other cultural events. It also serves as a venue for Hot Docs, which is North America's largest documentary film festival. Originally designed to be a wing onto New College, Innis College was founded separately in 1964 as the second non-federated college to be formed under the University's administration. Although initially located at the Macdonald-Mowatt house on St. George Street, the College has since relocated to a building on Sussex Avenue that incorporates a substantial Victorian home into a functional modern structure designed by Jack Diamond and Barton Myers.

Arthur Leonard Schawlow was an American physicist. He is best remembered for his work on lasers, for which he shared the 1981 Nobel Prize in Physics... with Nicolaas Bloembergen and Kai Siegbahn. His mother, Helen Mason, was from Canada and his father, Arthur Schawlow, was a Jewish immigrant from Latvia. When Arthur was three years old, they moved to Toronto, Canada. At the age of 16 he completed high school at Vaughan Road Academy and received a scholarship in science at the University of Toronto. After earning his undergraduate degree Schawlow continued in graduate school at the University of Toronto which was interrupted due to World War II. At the end of the war he began work on his Ph.D at U of T with Professor Malcolm Crawford. He then took a postdoctoral position with Charles Townes at the physics department of Columbia University in the fall of 1949. In 1951 he married Aurelia Townes, younger sister to Charles Townes, and together they had three children; Arthur Jr., Helen, and Edith. Arthur Jr. was autistic, with very little speech ability.

Lorne Michaels, CM is a Canadian-American television producer, writer, and comedian best known for creating and producing Saturday Night Live and... producing the various film and TV projects that spun off from it. Michaels was born Lorne David Lipowitz in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, the son of Florence and Henry Abraham Lipowitz, a furrier. He was the eldest of the Lipowitz children. He has a sister, Barbara Lipowitz, who currently resides in Toronto, and a brother, Mark Lipowitz, who died from a brain tumor. Michaels attended the Forest Hill Collegiate Institute in Toronto and graduated from University College, University of Toronto, where he majored in English, in 1966. Michaels began his career as a writer and broadcaster for CBC Radio. He moved to Los Angeles from Toronto in 1968 to work as a writer for Laugh-In and The Beautiful Phyllis Diller Show. He starred with Hart Pomerantz in The Hart and Lorne Terrific Hour, a Canadian comedy series which ran briefly in the early 1970s. During the late 1960s, Michaels married Rosie Shuster, who later worked with him on Saturday Night Live as a writer.

James Crerar Reaney was an influential Canadian poet, playwright, librettist, and professor, "whose works transform small-town Ontario life into the... realm of dream and symbol." Reaney has won Canada's highest literary award, the Governor General's Award, three times. He has won the Governor General's Award for Poetry or Drama for both his poetry and his drama. He was born on a farm in Easthope near Stratford, Ontario on September 1, 1926 to James Nesbitt Reaney and Elizabeth Henrietta Crerar. Almost all of Reaney's poems, stories, and plays are articulations of where he grew up. At a young age he was interested in theatre, and created a puppet show for children while in his early teens. Reaney studied English at University College, University of Toronto, receiving his M.A. in 1949. The same year he also received the Governor General's Award, the first of three, at the age of 23, for his first book of poetry, Red Heart.. Reaney married on December 29, 1951 to fellow poet Colleen Thibaudeau in St. Thomas.

Dennis Beynon Lee, OC, MA is a Canadian poet, teacher, editor, and critic born in Toronto, Ontario. He is also a children's writer, well known for... his book of children's rhymes, Alligator Pie. After attending high school at the University of Toronto Schools, Lee received bachelor's and master's degrees in English from the University of Toronto. He taught English at the University's Victoria College from 1963 until 1967, at which time he became 'resource person' for Rochdale College. Also in 1967, Lee co-founded House of Anansi Press with Dave Godfrey, and served as its editorial director until 1972. From 1974 to 1979 he was a consulting editor for Macmillan of Canada. He was a writer in residence at Trent University in 1975, and at the University of Toronto in 1978-1979. In 1967 House of Anansi published Lee's first book of poetry, Kingdom of Absence, "a sequence of 43 sonnet variations." Lee followed that up the next year with a long meditative poem, Civil Elegies.

Stephen Arthur Cook is a renowned American-Canadian computer scientist and mathematician who has made major contributions to the fields of... complexity theory and proof complexity. He is currently a University Professor at the University of Toronto, Department of Computer Science and Department of Mathematics. Cook received his Bachelor's degree in 1961 from the University of Michigan, and his Master's degree and Ph.D. from Harvard University, respectively in 1962 and 1966. He joined the University of California, Berkeley, mathematics department in 1966 as an Assistant Professor, and stayed there until 1970 when he was denied reappointment. In a speech celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Berkeley EECS department, fellow Turing Award winner and Berkeley professor Richard Karp said that, "It is to our everlasting shame that we were unable to persuade the math department to give him tenure." Cook joined the faculty of University of Toronto, Computer Science and Mathematics Departments in 1970 as an Associate Professor, where he was promoted to Professor in 1975 and University Professor in 1985.

Florestan Fernandes was a Brazilian sociologist and politician. He was also elected federal deputy twice. He came from a poor family with his mother... being a "washerwoman". In youth he took a series of odd jobs and had an erratic education until he attended the university in 1941. In 1945 he graduated and by 1964 was a full professor in sociology. In that same year he won the Prêmio Jabuti. In 1969 he fled to Canada for political reasons and began to teach at the University of Toronto. In 1973 he returned to Brazil and became involved in the Partido dos Trabalhadores. At 75 he died of an embolism.

Scott Duncan Tremaine is a Canadian-born astrophysicist. He is a fellow of the Royal Society of London, the Royal Society of Canada and the National... Academy of Sciences. Tremaine is widely regarded as one of the world's leading astrophysicists for his contributions to the theory of solar system and galactic dynamics. Tremaine is the namesake of asteroid 3806 Tremaine. He is credited with coining the name "Kuiper belt" He obtained a bachelor's degree at McMaster University in 1971, and a Ph.D. from Princeton University in 1975. He further received an honorary Ph.D. from McMaster University in 1996. He was an associate professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 1981 to 1985. He became the first director of the Canadian Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics at the University of Toronto in 1986, a position he held until 1996. He gained the rare distinction of "University Professor" at the University of Toronto in 1995. In 1997, he left CITA and took up a position as a professor at Princeton University, becoming chair of the Astrophysical Sciences department from 1998 to 2006.

Colonel Charles Perry Stacey, OC, OBE, CD, FRSC was a Canadian historian and university professor. He was the official historian of the Canadian... Army in the Second World War, and has been published extensively on matters both military and political. Stacey was born in Toronto, Ontario. After attending the University of Toronto Schools, he received a B.A. degree in History from the University of Toronto in 1924. He received a second Bachelor's degree in History from Corpus Christi College, Oxford in 1929. In 1933, he received a Ph.D. degree from Princeton University. From 1933 to 1940, he was a member of the History department at Princeton University. Stacey joined the Militia before the Second World War. His service as one of the Canadian Army's historians is well chronicled in his autobiography. He served in the United Kingdom for the majority of the war, collecting and collating information for future historians, as well as writing contemporary reports. Stacey's works have contributed much to the study of certain controversial operations such as the Dieppe Raid and Operation Spring.
