The University of Vermont College of Medicine is an American medical school located in Burlington, Vermont and associated with the University of... Vermont . Established in 1822, it is the nation's seventh oldest medical school. The primary teaching hospital for the UVM College of Medicine is Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington. The UVM College of Medicine offers both MD and MD/PhD programs. In 2007, there were 431 medical and 23 MD/PhD students enrolled. Each class contains approximately 110 students; the entering class of 2015 contains 112 students. The school's medical curriculum is known as the "Vermont Integrated Curriculum". It has both traditional, subject-based and more contemporary, organ/system-based components. The first 18 months of the curriculum are devoted to basic and clinical science; the remainder of the four-year program largely consists of clinical clerkships. The college is one of the top 10 hardest to get into in terms of acceptance rate. The college currently accepts 4% of students who apply. The UVM College of Medicine offers both MD and MD/PhD programs.

Jody Williams is an American political activist known around the world for her work in banning antipersonnel landmines, her defense of human rights... – and especially those of women, and her efforts to promote new understandings of security in today’s world. She served as the founding coordinator of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines from early 1992 until February 1998. Prior to that work, she spent eleven years on various projects related to the wars in Nicaragua and El Salvador. In an unprecedented cooperative effort with governments, UN bodies and the International Committee of the Red Cross, she served as a chief strategist and spokesperson for the ICBL, which she developed from two non-governmental organizations with a staff of one – herself – to an international powerhouse of 1,300 NGOs in ninety countries. From its small beginning and official launch in 1992, Williams and the ICBL dramatically achieved the campaign’s goal of an international treaty banning antipersonnel landmines during a diplomatic conference held in Oslo in September 1997. Three weeks later, she and the ICBL were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

Bernd Heinrich, Ph.D , is a professor emeritus in the biology department at the University of Vermont and is the author of a number of books about... nature writing, behavior, biology, ecology, and evolution. Heinrich has made major contributions to the study of insect physiology and behavior, as well as bird behavior. In addition to other publications, Heinrich has written over fifteen books, mostly related to his research examining the physiological and behavioral adaptations of other animals to their physical environments. However, he has also written books that include more of his personal reflections on nature. Heinrich earned his Ph.D in 1970 from the University of California, Los Angeles. In 1971, he accepted a position at the University of California, Berkeley where he became a professor of entomology. He stayed at Berkeley until 1980. Between 1976 and 1977 he was a Guggenheim and Harvard Fellow. In 1980 Heinrich accepted a position as a professor of zoology/biology at the University of Vermont. From 1988 to 1989 he was a von Humboldt Fellow. Heinrich has won numerous long distance running events and set a number of open U.S.
