The University of Virginia School of Architecture is the university's architecture school. The school confers undergraduate and postgraduate degrees... in architecture, landscape architecture, architectural history, and urban and environmental planning. Additionally, the school offers a certificate in historic preservation. The Ph.D program in architectural history was once maintained at the School of Architecture but has since been transferred to the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences. The School of Architecture was a cornerstone of founder Thomas Jefferson's concept for the University. Jefferson intended to use the architecture of the Academical Village as a didactic instrument for students. Evidence suggests that Jefferson planned to instruct architecture students himself, but he died in 1826 before his vision could be realized. It would take more than 100 years after Jefferson's death for the School of Architecture to be formed. In 1919, a School of Fine Arts was established under the direction of Sidney Fiske Kimball, for whom the University's Fine Arts Library is named.

The Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy at the University of Virginia was established in 2007 with a $100 million gift from Frank... Batten, Sr. Harry Harding, previously the dean of the George Washington University Elliott School of International Affairs, was selected as the school's founding dean in January 2009. The school currently offers a 5-year Bachelors/MPP program for undergraduates as well as a 2-year MPP program for graduate students. The Batten School is the newest school established at the University since the Darden Graduate School of Business Administration was established in 1954. The school will be closely aligned with many of the University's schools, including law, business, medicine, engineering, and education, as well as with key programs such as politics, economics, and applied ethics.

Virginia Law is third nationally in the number of alumni who are chairpersons and managing partners at law firms nationwide, and a survey by the National Law Journal found that the law school ranked fifth in the number of graduates hired by NLJ's top 250 firms in 2009.

The University of Virginia College and Graduate School of Arts and Sciences is the largest of the University of Virginia's ten schools. Consisting of... both a graduate and an undergraduate program, the College comprises the liberal arts and humanities section of the University. Edward Ayers was the dean of the College through July 1, 2007, when he was named the ninth President of the University of Richmond; Karen L. Ryan was named Interim Dean after his departure, and Meredith Jung-En Woo became dean on June 1, 2008. The College offers more than 45 undergraduate majors and more than 24 graduate programs. The College of Arts and Sciences, first named the "academic department" was authorized by the Board of Visitors in 1824 along with the School of Law and the School of Medicine. Classes first conferred in March 1825. Under the presidency of Edwin Alderman, the department was officially separated into the "College of Arts and Sciences" and the "Graduate School of Arts and Sciences", and was substantially expanded, including the founding of departments of music and fine arts .

The University of Virginia's College at Wise is the liberal arts college of the University of Virginia, and a member of the Council of Public... Liberal Arts Colleges, located in Wise, Virginia, United States. It is the only branch of the University of Virginia, and the westernmost public college in Virginia. The college was first conceived by local residents who petitioned the University of Virginia to establish a college in Wise. As support for a college grew, the Commonwealth of Virginia appropriated $5,000 to open, staff, and operate the college as a two-year junior college on a trial basis for a year; and if successful, another $5,000 would be available for a second year. In the winter of 1954, the local community matched the commonwealth's funds and collected over $6,000 to furnish the classrooms and use for supplies. Wise County donated over 400-acre of property that included two sandstone buildings, the property had once served as the county's poor farm. Clinch Valley College of the University of Virginia opened in September 1954 with an enrollment of 100 freshmen.

The University of Virginia School of Medicine is a medical school located in Charlottesville, Virginia, United States. The tenth medical school to... open in the United States, it has been part of the University of Virginia since the University's establishment in 1819 by Thomas Jefferson. The school's facilities are on the University of Virginia Grounds adjacent to the historic Academical Village, and it shares a close association with the University of Virginia Health System. The current dean of the School of Medicine is noted Alzheimer's disease researcher Dr. Steven T. DeKosky, formerly of the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. DeKosky became dean on August 1, 2008, taking over from interim dean Sharon L. Hostler, a specialist in pediatrics. Medical education was one of the fields of study at the University of Virginia since its founding by Thomas Jefferson in 1819, forming a cornerstone of Jefferson's 1814 plan for a school of higher education and in his 1817 bill to the General Assembly which first proposed the idea of a central university at the head of an integrated system of public education across the commonwealth.

Robert Francis Kennedy, Jr., is an American radio host, activist, and attorney specializing in environmental law. He is the third of eleven children... born to Ethel Kennedy and Robert F. Kennedy and is the nephew of John F. Kennedy and Ted Kennedy. Kennedy co-hosts Ring of Fire, a nationally syndicated American radio program. After obtaining his high school diploma from Pomfret School, Kennedy continued his studies at Harvard University and the London School of Economics, graduating from Harvard College in 1976 with a Bachelor of Arts in American History and Literature. He then obtained a law degree from the University of Virginia and a Master of Laws degree from Pace University. Kennedy married Emily Ruth Black on April 3, 1982, in Bloomington, Indiana; she is the daughter of Thomas Black and Libby Armstrong. They have two children: Robert F. III, b. 1984, and Kathleen Alexandra, b. 1988. They divorced on March 25, 1994, in the Dominican Republic. Kennedy subsequently married Mary Richardson on April 15, 1994, aboard a research vessel along the Hudson River.

Drew was born in Charlottesville, Virginia, and raised in Stony Brook, New York, on Long Island. Her mother, Dr. Jeannie Drew, was the Head of Science at the Riverdale Country School in The Bronx. She is now teaching biology at the independent private school for girls, Brearley, in Manhattan. Her father, Rev. Charles Drew, is the senior pastor at Emmanuel Presbyterian Church in New York City. Her second cousin is actor Benjamin McKenzie. Drew began acting in school plays, community theater with Take One Theatre Arts, and summer stock. Drew received a Bachelor's degree in Drama from the University of Virginia in 2002. Drew and her husband, Peter Lanfer, a lecturer at UCLA and visiting faculty at Dartmouth, reside in Los Angeles. Drew is good friends with fellow Everwood star Emily VanCamp. On May 20, 2011, Drew was a judge at the UCLA Spring Sing. On January 18, 2012, Drew and Lanfer welcomed their first child, a son named Micah Emmanuel.

Ronald Harry Coase is a British-born, American-based economist and the Clifton R. Musser Professor Emeritus of Economics at the University of... Chicago Law School. After studying with the University of London External Programme in 1927–29, Coase entered the London School of Economics, where he took courses with Arnold Plant. He received the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics in 1991. Coase is best known for two articles in particular: "The Nature of the Firm" , which introduces the concept of transaction costs to explain the nature and limits of firms, and "The Problem of Social Cost" , which suggests that well-defined property rights could overcome the problems of externalities . Coase is also often referred to as the "father" of reform in the policy for allocation of the electromagnetic spectrum, based on his article "The Federal Communications Commission" , where he criticizes spectrum licensing, suggesting property rights as a more efficient method of allocating spectrum to users.

Deborah Eisenberg is an American short-story writer, actor and teacher. Eisenberg grew up in suburban Chicago, Illinois, and moved to New York City... in the late 1960s. She was an editorial assistant at The New York Review of Books in 1973. Her longtime companion is actor-writer Wallace Shawn. She teaches at the University of Virginia. Eisenberg still lives in New York City. Eisenberg has written four collections of stories: Transactions in a Foreign Currency , Under the 82nd Airborne , All Around Atlantis , and Twilight of the Superheroes . Her first two story collections were republished in one volume as The Work of Deborah Eisenberg . All four short-story collections were reprinted in 2010 in The Collected Stories of Deborah Eisenberg She has also written a play, Pastorale, which was produced at Second Stage in New York City in 1982. Eisenberg has written for such magazines as The New York Review of Books, The New Yorker, and The Yale Review. Eisenberg was the recipient of the Rea Award for the Short Story in the year 2000, an award granted for significant contribution to the short story form.

Anthony Bernard Duncan Mayes is a retired teacher, broadcaster, university dean, lecturer and author. Born in Britain, Mayes is now a citizen of the... United States of America. He lives in San Francisco. After studying classical civilizations at Cambridge University, Mayes worked first as a high school teacher of Latin, Greek and history. He was then ordained as an Anglican priest. Mayes emigrated to the United States in 1958 and became an Episcopal worker-priest and director of a student house attached to Judson Memorial Church in Greenwich Village and New York University . He then moved to the Diocese of California where he held a parish near San Francisco. While in San Francisco, Mayes founded San Francisco Suicide Prevention, later used as a model throughout the United States. Openly gay himself, Mayes organized a sexuality study center for the Episcopal Diocese of California. This ministry, originally known as the Parsonage, was awarded the Episcopal Jubilee citation and later evolved into the present-day Oasis organization.

Jesse Wakefield Beams was an American physicist at the University of Virginia. Beams completed his undergraduate B.A. in physics at Fairmount... College in 1921 and his master's degree the next year at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He spent most of his academic career at the University of Virginia, where he received his Ph.D. in physics in 1925. He spent the next three years in a physics fellowship at Yale University, where he performed research on the photoelectric effect with Ernest Lawrence. Beams was appointed a professor of physics at the University of Virginia in 1929. During World War II, he worked on the Manhattan Project, where his ultracentrifuge was used to demonstrate the separation of the uranium isotope U-235 from other isotopes. Officials in charge of the atomic bomb project concluded, however, that Beams's centrifuges were not as likely as other methods to produce enough highly enriched uranium for a bomb in the time available, and the centrifuge program was abandoned.
