The Olivas Adobe, located in Ventura, California, is an adobe built in 1841 by Raymundo Olivas. Olivas received, in recognition of his service at the... Presidio of Santa Barbara, approximately 2,250 acres as part of land grant from Governor Juan Bautista Alvarado in 1841, which he named Rancho San Miguel. The land had originally been part of Mission San Buenaventura, but was appropriated during the secularization of the missions. Olivas built the adobe home in 1841, and expanded it in 1849 to two stories, making it the only such building in the area. He and wife and their 21 children lived here until 1899. It later became part of Max Fleischman's holdings , and it was he who donated the land and the house to the City of Ventura. The adobe is rumored to be haunted by a woman ghost and is listed as one of Ventura County's few haunted locations. The Olivas Adobe is registered as California Historical Landmark #115 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

Joanne Brackeen is an American jazz pianist and music educator. She was born Joanne Grogan in Ventura, California. She attended the Los Angeles... Conservatory of Music, but devoted herself to jazz by imitating Frankie Carle albums. She was influenced by Charlie Parker and bebop. Her career began in the late 1950s while working with names like Dexter Gordon, Teddy Edwards, Harold Land, Don Cherry, Charlie Haden and Charles Lloyd, but in 1969 it began to "take off" as she became the first woman in Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. She played with Joe Henderson and Stan Getz before leading her own trio and quartet. Brackeen established herself as a cutting edge pianist and composer through her appearances around the world, and her solo performances also cemented her reputation as one of the most innovative and dynamic of pianists. Her trios featured such noted players as Clint Houston, Eddie Gomez, John Patitucci, Jack DeJohnette, Cecil McBee, and Billy Hart. She served on the grant panel for the National Endowment for the Arts, toured the Middle East with the US State Department as sponsor, and had solo performances at Carnegie Hall.
