Istanbul is the largest city of Turkey, home to a population of 13,483,052 in 2011. A megacity, it is the nation's cultural, economic, and financial center. During its long history, Istanbul has served as the capital of the Roman Empire , the Eastern Roman Empire , the Latin Empire , and the Ottoman Empire . When the new Republic of Turkey was proclaimed in 1923, Ankara was chosen as its capital. Istanbul's historic areas were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985. It was named a joint European Capital of Culture for 2010 and the European Capital of Sports for 2012.
