Wailuku

The Iao Theater is a Spanish Mission style theater opened in 1928, in the city of Wailuku, Maui Hawaii. It was originally both a movie and vaudeville... house, until it fell into disrepair in the 1980s. Facing possible demolition, in 1994, it was listed on the State of Hawaii's Register of Historic Places. It was placed on The National Register of Historic Places in 1995. It later became the home of Maui OnStage, a community-based theatrical organization. In December 1927, Manuel Gomes Paschoal and H. B. Weller broke ground for Iao Theater on Market Street. The theater was designed by Edward Walsh. After nearly 9 months and $40,000 in construction costs, Iao Theater opened on August 22, 1928. The theater opened with a local play featuring local actors, and the showing of Sporting Goods starring Richard Dix at night. The theater was one of several theaters in Wailuku, and was named after a small bait fish named the ʻiao. Aside from screening movies, the theater also hosted live onstage performances.

The Bailey House Museum, also known as Old Bailey House, is a museum of Hawaiian history located in Wailuku, Hawaii, on the island of Maui, owned and... operated by the Maui Historical Society. The house is situated at the mouth of the Iao Valley within the former royal compound of Kahekili II, last ruling chief of Maui. Built in 1833 and being one of the first western-style houses in Wailuku, the “Old Bailey House” is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Originally intended as a mission for adults and children, in 1837 the mission was transformed into the Wailuku Female Seminary, a boarding school that not only taught its students Christianity and academic pursuits, such as the three Rs, but also domestic skills such as sewing and housekeeping. First managed by Theodosia and Rev. Jonathan Smith Green, Edward and Caroline Bailey assumed responsibility in 1844 shortly after arriving in Hawaii. Despite sponsorship by the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions, the Seminary was closed in 1847, a victim of funding shortfalls. The house and land reverted to the Hawaiian crown but were purchased by the Baileys in 1850.
