Washington University School of Medicine , located in St. Louis, Missouri, is one of the graduate schools of Washington University in St. Louis. One... of the top medical schools in the United States, it is currently ranked 4th for research according to 'U.S. News and World Report' and has been listed among the top ten medical schools since rankings were first published in 1987. The School of Medicine consistently ranks first in the nation in student selectivity. Located on the eastern border of Forest Park, it is affiliated with Barnes-Jewish Hospital, St. Louis Children's Hospital, the St. Louis Veteran's Administration Hospital, Shriner's Hospital for Children and several other community sites. Founded in 1891, the School of Medicine has 1,260 students, of which 604 are pursuing a Medical Degree with or without a combined Doctor of Philosophy or other advanced degree. It also offers doctorate degrees in biomedical research through the Division of Biology and Biological Sciences.

The Olin Business School is one of seven academic schools at Washington University in St. Louis. Founded in 1917, the business school was renamed for... entrepreneur John M. Olin in 1988. The school offers BSBA, Master of Business Administration , MS in Supply Chain Management, MS in Finance, Masters in Accounting, Executive MBA, and PhD degrees. In 2002, an Executive MBA program was established in Shanghai, in cooperation with Fudan University. Olin has been consistently ranked among the world's top business schools by the Wall Street Journal, US News & World Report, the Financial Times, BusinessWeek and the Economist. In 2010, the Wall Street Journal ranked the Executive MBA program 2nd in the world. In the 2011 edition, US News ranked the full-time MBA program 20th in the United States and the part-time MBA program 10th while BusinessWeek ranked the undergraduate program 14th. The Olin Business School includes the 80,000 sq ft Simon Hall, whose 1986 construction was largely funded by a gift from John E. Simon; and the Charles F. Knight Executive Education Center on the Danforth Campus. Olin has a network of about 17,600 alumni all over the world.

Josephine Winslow Johnson was an American novelist, poet, and essayist. She won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1935 at age 24 for her first... novel, Now in November. Shortly thereafter, she published Winter Orchard, a collection of short stories that had previously appeared in Atlantic Monthly, Vanity Fair, The St. Louis Review, and Hound & Horn. Of these stories, "Dark" won an O. Henry Award in 1934, and "John the Six" won an O. Henry Award third prize the following year. Johnson continued writing short stories and won three more O. Henry Awards: for "Alexander to the Park" , "The Glass Pigeon" , and "Night Flight" . Johnson was born June 20, 1910, in Kirkwood, Missouri. She attended Washington University in St. Louis from 1926 to 1931, but did not earn a degree. She wrote her first novel, Now In November, while living in her mother's attic in Webster Groves, Missouri. She remained on her farm in Webster Groves and completed Winter Orchard in 1935. She published four more books before marrying Grant G. Cannon, editor in chief of the Farm Quarterly, in 1942.

Bill Dedman, an American journalist, is an investigative reporter for news site msnbc.com and a recipient of the Pulitzer Prize for Investigative... Reporting. In 1989, Dedman received the Pulitzer Prize for Investigative Reporting for The Color of Money, a series of articles in Bill Kovach's Atlanta Journal-Constitution on racial discrimination by mortgage lenders in middle-income neighborhoods. Born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Dedman grew up in Red Bank, Tennessee. He graduated from the Baylor School in Chattanooga, and attended Washington University in St. Louis. He started in journalism at age 16 as a copy boy at The Chattanooga Times. He was a newspaper reporter for the The Daily Star-Journal in Warrensburg, Missouri; newspapers in Chattanooga and Knoxville; and for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Washington Post, and The Boston Globe. He was the first director of computer-assisted reporting for The Associated Press, and has written for The New York Times. In 2006 he joined msnbc.com, where he has written about topics including firefighter deaths, interrogations at the Guantanamo detention facility, and the reclusive heiress Huguette Clark.

Daniel Nathans was an American microbiologist. He was born in Wilmington, Delaware, the last of nine children born to Russian Jewish immigrant... parents. During the Great Depression his father lost his small business and was unemployed for a long period of time. Nathans went to public schools and then to the University of Delaware, where he studied chemistry, philosophy, and literature. He received his M.D. degree from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri in 1954. Nathans served as President of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland from 1995 to 1996. Along with Werner Arber and Hamilton Smith, Nathans received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1978 for the discovery of restriction enzymes. He was also awarded with National Medal of Science in 1993. In 1999, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine announced the creation of the McKusick-Nathans Institute of Genetic Medicine that was named in his honor posthumously along with Victor McKusick . In 2005, the School of Medicine named one of its four colleges after Dr. Nathans.

Earl Wilbur Sutherland Jr. was an American pharmacologist and biochemist. Sutherland was born in Burlingame, Kansas. He won a Nobel Prize in... Physiology or Medicine in 1971 "for his discoveries concerning the mechanisms of the action of hormones," especially epinephrine, via second messengers . Sutherland received his bachelor's degree in chemistry in 1937 from Washburn University, Topeka, Kansas and earned his medical degree in 1942 from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. After serving as a doctor in World War II, he returned to Washington University as a researcher in the pharmacology laboratory of Nobel laureate Carl Ferdinand Cori. In 1953, he became director of the department of pharmacology at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, where he discovered the role of cyclic AMP in mediating the action of certain hormones. In 1963, desiring to limit his duties to research, Sutherland moved to Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville, where he was a professor of physiology until 1973.
