Wilkes-Barre /ˈwɪlksbærə/ is a city in the US state of Pennsylvania, the county seat of Luzerne County. It is at the center of the Wyoming Valley area with a population 41,498 making it the 10th largest city in the state of Pennsylvania. It is one of the principal cities in the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre metropolitan area, which had a population of 563,631 as of the 2010 Census making it the fourth largest metro/statistical area in the state of Pennsylvania. Founded in 1769 and formally incorporated in 1806, the city had a population of 41,498 in 2010. Wilkes-Barre and the... surrounding Wyoming Valley are framed by the Pocono Mountains to the east, the Endless Mountains to the west and the Lehigh Valley to the south. The Susquehanna River flows through the center of the valley and defines the northwestern border of the city. Described by many today as one of America's more "historical cities", Wilkes-Barre has gained considerable bad press since the Knox Mine Disaster. In the 1960 presidential campaign, it garnered attention for its high levels of poverty. In 1972, the damage done by the Agnes flood made international headlines.
