Saint Boniface Cathedral is a Roman Catholic basilica and the cathedral of Saint Boniface, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. It is an important building in... Winnipeg, and is the principal church in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Saint Boniface, serving the eastern part of Manitoba province as well as the local Franco-Manitoban community. The basilica sits in the centre of the city at 190 avenue de la Cathédrale, Saint Boniface. The first church on the site was founded by Fr. Norbert Provencher, a priest and future bishop, who ordered its construction in 1818 in the form of a small log chapel. In 1832 Bishop Provencher built the first cathedral but on December 14, 1860, a fire destroyed the first building. In 1862, Bishop Alexandre Taché rebuilt the cathedral in stone. By 1900, St. Boniface was the fifth largest city in the West and needed a larger cathedral. Local contractors Senecal and Smith were engaged to build a new cathedral to plans by Montreal architect Jean-Omer Marchand. On August 15, 1906, Monsignor Louis-Philippe Adelard Langevin dedicated the cathedral, which became one of the most imposing churches in Western Canada.

The Manitoba Legislative Building is the meeting place of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba, in central Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. It was... originally named the Manitoba Parliament Building, not Legislative. The neoclassical building was completed in 1920 and stands seventy-seven meters tall . It was designed and built by Frank Worthington Simon and Henry Boddington III, along with other masons and many skilled craftsmen. The building is famous for the Golden Boy, a gold covered bronze statue based on the style of the Roman god Mercury, or the Greek god Hermes, at the top of the cupola, or domed ceiling. The Manitoba Legislative Building is open every day of the year for self-guided tours, and guided tours are available. In 1911, the Manitoba government announced an architectural competition to all architects in the British Empire, with a grand prize of $10,000 was offered for the best design for the new Manitoba Legislative Building. It is the third building used by Manitoba's legislative assembly, the first being the home of A.G.B. Bannatyne, while the second stood on the same grounds as the current Legislative building.

The Esplanade Riel is a pedestrian bridge located in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, designed by Colin Douglas Stewart of Wardrop Engineering and the... architect Étienne Gaboury, and completed in 2003. It spans the Red River connecting downtown Winnipeg with St. Boniface. It is paired with a vehicular bridge, Provencher Bridge. The bridge is one of a few in the world that has a restaurant on it, giving patrons an excellent view of the river and the bridge's structure. The Esplanade Riel has become a landmark and is used in many promotional materials. The bridge itself is a side-spar cable-stayed bridge. The original drawing, stamped by Colin Douglas Stewart, rests in the Engineering building of the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg.

Christine Fellows is a Canadian folk-pop singer-songwriter from Winnipeg, Manitoba. Born in Windsor, Ontario and raised in France and Kelowna,... British Columbia, Fellows lived in Toronto, Vancouver, Guelph and Montreal before settling in Winnipeg in 1992. In 1993, she formed her first group, Helen, with Barry Mirochnick, Paul James, and Chang. Helen broke up in 1995, and in 1996 Fellows teamed up with singer-songwriter Keri McTighe, Barry Mirochnick, Keith McLeod and Peggy Messing, to form Special Fancy. The group released one album, King Me. In 2000 Fellows released her debut solo album, 2 Little Birds. This was followed by The Last One Standing in 2002, Paper Anniversary in 2005, and Nevertheless in 2007. These albums feature Leanne Zacharias , Jason Tait , Barry Mirochnick , John K. Samson , Keith McLeod , Monica Guenter , Greg Smith , Ed Reifel , and Cristina Zacharias . Fellows has performed with the Rheostatics, Veda Hille, The Mountain Goats, Kim Barlow, Martin Tielli, Old Man Luedecke and The Weakerthans. She is married to The Weakerthans' lead singer, John K.

Guy Maddin, OM is a Canadian screenwriter, director, cinematographer and film editor of both features and short films from Winnipeg, Manitoba. His... most distinctive quality is his penchant for recreating the look and style of silent or early sound era films which has solidified his popularity and acclaim in alternative film circles. While Maddin strives to recreate the styles and moods of early film melodramas, Weimar Republic German silent films, and 1920s Soviet agit-prop, his own personal style lies in his use of clichés, psychosexual situations, bizarre stories and humour. Reminiscent of the early work of American director David Lynch, it is this self-conscious and surreal merging of early film-making techniques with a post-modern sensibility that give Maddin's films a style referred to as "Ultra-Conformist" or "Anti-Progressive". Assistance from provincial and national Arts Councils as well as the Winnipeg Film Group aid in Maddin's pursuit in the making of his films. Leonard Joseph “Len” Cariou is a Canadian actor, best known for his portrayal of Sweeney Todd in the original cast of Sweeney Todd, the... Demon Barber of Fleet Street. He currently plays the patriarch, Henry Reagan, NYPD Police Commissioner , in the multi-generational television series Blue Bloods on CBS. Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Cariou is the son of Molly Estelle and George Marius Cariou, a salesman. His father was French Canadian and his mother was of Irish descent. Cariou attended Holy Cross School Miles MacDonell Collegiate for grades ten and eleven where he directed and starred in the school plays and he later attended St Paul's College. Cariou started acting in Winnipeg at the Manitoba Theatre Centre and later at the Stratford, Ontario, tackling classical roles like King Lear, Macbeth, Prospero, Coriolanus, Brutus, Petruchio, Iago, Oberon, and Henry V. He was offered a scholarship at the National Theatre School of Canada in Montreal but, married with a young child and financial responsibilities, he rejected it.

Kreviazuk's first album, Under These Rocks and Stones, was released in June 1997 to much critical praise. The album was certified double platinum by the CRIA for selling over 200,000 copies in the U.S., fueled mostly by the singles "Surrounded" and "God Made Me". Three videos from the album receive modest play on the video channel MuchMusic and radio , but it was a fourth, "Surrounded", that became her first major Canadian airplay hit in 1997. That year, Kreviazuk received her first Juno Award nomination as Best New Artist. She also took part in the 1998 Lilith Fair music festival; "Surrounded" was included in the live compilation album from that year. In 1999, Kreviazuk released her second album. Titled Colour Moving and Still, it featured tracks written with her new husband, Raine Maida, lead singer of Our Lady Peace.

Neil Percival Young, OC, OM is a Canadian singer-songwriter who is widely regarded as one of the most influential musicians of his generation. Young... began performing as a solo artist in Canada in 1960, before moving to California in 1966, where he co-founded the band Buffalo Springfield along with Stephen Stills and Richie Furay, and later joined Crosby, Stills & Nash as a fourth member in 1969. He forged a successful and acclaimed solo career, releasing his first album in 1968; his career has since spanned over 40 years and 34 studio albums, with a continual and uncompromising exploration of musical styles. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame website describes Young as "one of rock and roll’s greatest songwriters and performers". He has been inducted into the Hall of Fame twice: first as a solo artist in 1995, and second as a member of Buffalo Springfield in 1997. Young's work is characterized by his distinctive guitar work, deeply personal lyrics and signature alto or high tenor singing voice.

Ash Koley is a Canadian New Wave/alternative pop band from Winnipeg, Manitoba. The band consists of Ashley Michelle Koley , after whom the band is... named, and Phil Deschambault . Ashley Michelle Koley was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She graduated from Miles MacDonell Collegiate and graduated with her Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry at the University of Winnipeg. During her childhood she studied dance and musical theater. She began formal singing lessons at the age of 5. During her high school years she sang with the group Prodigy, an advanced placed singing group led by producer/songwriter, Zane Zalis. Koley also sang with the Winnipeg-based ABBA tribute group Super Trooper. Phil Deschambault is an established songwriter, producer, and artist who grew up in Russell, Manitoba. Phil has been a singer/songwriter and guitarist in numerous bands in Winnipeg including Jonah Stone, Not Going to Vegas, and Vanderveen. Koley and Deschambault met in 2004.

Clara Hughes, OC, OM , currently resides in Glen Sutton, Quebec. Hughes is a Canadian cyclist and speed skater, and has won multiple Olympic medals... in both sports. Hughes won two bronze in the Summer Olympics in 1996 and four medals over the course of three Winter Olympics. She is tied with fellow Winnipeger Cindy Klassen as the Canadian with the most Olympic medals; though Klassen won all of hers in Winter Olympic events. Hughes started speed skating at the age of 16, she then took up the sport of cycling at the age of 17. She would eventually return to the sport of speed skating at the age of 28, after achieving her success in Atlanta. With her experience and endurance earned through cycling, Hughes would then go on to a successful career competing in the 3,000 m and 5,000 m. This would eventually lead her to medal in these long distance events at the Winter Olympics. In winning both Summer and Winter Olympic medals she is one of only five people to have won medals in both versions of the games, and is the only person ever to have won multiple medals in both.

Douglas James Henning was a famous magician from Canada, illusionist, escape artist and a politician. Henning was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, began... practicing magic at Oakenwald School in Fort Garry, and later moved to Oakville, Ontario. He performed his first show at the age of 14 at the birthday party of a friend and was inspired by his audience's spellbound reaction. Within a few months of placing an ad in a local newspaper, Henning launched a series of performances on local television in Toronto, and as an entertainer at parties. He was a student at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario and studied psychology. Henning met Ivan Reitman there when he appeared in the 1968 Reitman directed production of Li'l Abner in the role of Lonesome Polecat. Shortly after university, Henning was awarded a Canada Council for the Arts grant. The terms of the grant required Henning to study magic. He did so, traveling to view first hand the talents of such magic greats as Slydini and Dai Vernon. Doug studied under Tony Slydini and considered him his primary teacher of magic.

Rain was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He studied acting at the Banff School of Fine Arts in Banff, Alberta, as well as in London at the Old Vic School. As a stage actor, his long association with the Stratford Festival of Canada spans more than four decades. He has performed in many diverse roles on stage, most notably recognized for his performance at Stratford, Ontario in Henry V, which was made into a television production in 1966.

Monte Halperin, OC, OM , better known by the stage name Monty Hall, is a Canadian-born MC, producer, actor, singer and sportscaster, best known as... host of the television game show Let's Make a Deal. Hall was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, the son of Rose and Maurice Harvey Halperin, both of whom belonged to an Orthodox congregation of Judaism and who jointly owned a slaughterhouse. He was raised in Winnipeg's north end, where he attended St. John's High School. Hall started his career in Winnipeg in radio, moving to Toronto in 1946. Early in his career, Hall hosted game shows such as Bingo at Home on WABD-TV and guest-hosted more established game shows such as Strike It Rich on CBS, before hosting the first show of his own, Keep Talking in 1958. Hall also did color-commentary on New York Rangers radio broadcasts during the 1959-60 season. He succeeded Jack Narz as host of a well-received and unique game show called Video Village, which ran from 1960 to 1962 on CBS. On Video Village, contestants played on a giant game board consisting of three sections: Money Street, Bridge Street and Magic Mile.
